May 24, 1994 <br /> <br />CITY MANAGER'S REPORT <br /> <br />94-181 - Letter from the City Manager recommending adoption of <br />an ordinance to appropriate $1,417,000 from the Capital <br />Improvements Fund for renovations to the building located in <br />the 200 block of High Street, that will become the Children's <br />Museum of Virginia. <br /> <br /> "The Children's Museum of Virginia is scheduled to open in <br />December 1994. Bids were received on May 12, 1994 for the <br />required renovations to the building. The bids received are <br />competitive and favorable with today's construction market (See <br />Attachment No. 1). The total anticipated project costs are as <br />follows: <br /> <br />Construction Contract <br />Carpet and Vinyl Base <br />Acoustics <br />Gift Shop Finishes <br />Access and Mall Area <br />HVAC Upgrade (General Services) <br />Elevator Upgrade <br />Furnishings <br />Dome Lighting (Planetarium) <br />Contract Administration <br />Contingencies <br /> <br />(Commonwealth Construction) <br /> <br />TOTAL ANTICIPATED PROJECT COST <br /> <br />998,436 <br /> 65i000 <br /> 25,000 <br /> 35,000 <br /> 80,000 <br /> 25,000 <br /> 10,000 <br /> 20,000 <br /> 18,200 <br /> 50,000 <br /> 90,364 <br /> <br />$1,417,000 <br /> <br /> The Director of Public Works recommends that a contract be <br />awarded to the low bidder, Commonwealth Construction, and that <br />$1,417,000 be appropriated to complete this work. The total <br />construction time for this project is four months. <br /> <br /> I concur with the Director of Public Works and recommend <br />your approval of this item. With your approval, the balance in <br />the Capital Improvements Fund will be $14,999,116." <br /> <br />David Stuart, representing the Musuem & Fine Arts Commission, <br />spoke in favor of a glass atrium for the front exterior of the <br />Children's Museum. <br /> <br />Jackson Shaw, 503 Linda Road, spoke in favor of an atrium with <br />a carousel for the front exterior of the Children's Museum. <br /> <br />Karen Jordan, 107 Elmhurst Court, spoke in favor of an atrium <br />for the front exterior of the Children's Museum. <br /> <br />Dottie Wyatt, 99 Channing Avenue, spoke in favor of an atrium <br />for the front exterior of the Children's Museum. <br /> <br /> Motion by Mr. Epperson, and seconded by Mr. Griffin, to <br />adopt the following ordinance, and was adopted by the following <br />vote: <br /> <br /> "AN ORDINANCE TO APPROPRIATE $1,592,000.00 FROM THE <br />CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS FUND FOR RENOVATIONS OF THE BUILDING <br />LOCATED IN THE 200 BLOCK OF HIGH STREET, THAT WILL BECOME THE <br />CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF VIRGINIA." <br /> <br />Ayes: Epperson, Griffin, Hawks, King, Pitts, Webb <br />Nays: Clemons <br /> <br /> Motion by Mr. Hawks, and seconded by Mr. Griffin, to award <br />the contract for renovations for the Children's Museum to <br />Commonwealth Construction for $1,592,000.00, and was adopted by <br />the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: Epperson~ Griffin, Hawks, King, Pitts, Webb <br />Nays: Clemons <br /> <br /> <br />
