<br /> Your Committee had decided to adhere to its former action in recommending $150.00 each for
<br />the pay of said assessors, when they were advised by t~e City Attorne~ that it would be illegal to
<br />pay the assessors more than the~ were entitled to
<br />recommended,.therefore, that zazd assessors be allowed only $.50 per day'each for said services.

<br /> F~ank C. Hanrahan and suncbvy others to have refunded them the license taxes paid on slot ma-
<br />chines for the year 1911, said slot machines having been repressed by order of the Mayor.
<br /> It is recommended that the peti$ionezs be allowed a reba%e of five-sixths of the amount
<br />paid the City on each slot machine so repressed by order of the Mayor.

<br />vices, it is recommended that said bil~ be allowed; it is alee recommended ~hat the City Sergeant be
<br />allowed $1BO. 00 in lieu of ~1 fe&s that he might be allowed by law to cha~ge for hie services.

<br />A bill of the Treasurer, to amount of $75.90, for certifying the poll tax list.
<br /> It~is~=eoommended~$hat said bill be allowed.
<br />
<br /> It is further recommended ~hat the Treasurer b~ authorizeffto borrow $55,000~ or as much
<br />of the same as may be necessary, in order to refund the Paving Bond Account to that amount, and that
<br />the following resolution be adopted therefor:

<br /> Resolved, That the Treasurer be, and he is hereby, authorized to make notes in The Bank of
<br />Portsmouth, The Merchants' & Farmers' Bank, the Bank of Tidewater, and The First National Bank of
<br />Portsmouth, to amount of Fifty-five Thousand Dollars ($55,000.00), in order to re-imburse the Paving
<br />Bond funds to that amoun~ ~aid amount to be repaid from revenues of the City forths current year.

<br /> The report having been read, Mr. Montague moved that this body do not concur in the recommenda-
<br />tion of the Committee in regard to the non-employment of an engineer to furnish plans and specifica-
<br />tions for the Gosport and Swimming Point bridges, and that the matter be recommitted.'
<br /> The motion was adopted.
<br />
<br /> Mr. Markham observed that Mr. G. Hatton was present in the interest of Mr. Geo. D~ Lawrence,
<br />one of the late appraisers of City ~eal estate, and ~oved a ouspension of the rules to hear from Mr.
<br />Hatton on the subject. Adopted.
<br /> N~v. Hatton spoke at some length, giving his re,sons why he thought the report did not do justice
<br />to the appraisers.
<br /> Then Mr. Montague moved that the matter of pay for these assessors be sent back to the Finance
<br />Committee, and that they obtain the opinion of the City Attorney as to right of the City to m~ke an
<br />additional appropriation to the assessors, if the Council should think proper to do so.
<br /> Mr. Williams moved to amend that the recommendation of the Committee, both as to the assessors~
<br />Clerk of the Court, City Sergeant, and M~. C. ~. Markham, be also recommitted. The motion, as amended, wa~ adopted.
