Authorized to employ a competent person to supervise the construction of. the new Clerk's of- flee and the placing of metal furniture thersin~ at a cost not in excess of $600~00~ We report that we have employed the Architect of the building, }~r. B. P. Smith~ to super- vise thesame, at a cost of $550.00. Instructed to consider the advisability of disposing of several old houses owned by the 0ity at the north end of Washington street. We report that the Mayor has taken this matter in hand. A request of the City Sergeant to have renewed~the gutters around the Jail building, and to purchase 6 iron cots for old and sick prisoners. Progress as to same. Advisability of cancelling policies on the Sixth and Seventh Ward fire engines. We have looked into this matter and recommend that said p61icies be cancelled. To ascertain the cost of a fire engine house on Lincoln street. We report that the probable cost of a suitable engine house would be about~$5,000.O0. Referred by Board of Aldermen April 16th. A petition of the Annex fire company for certain improvements to their engine house. We believe that the several improvements asked for by the Annex fire company are needed, and an appropriation of $600.00 is recommended therefor. It is further recommended that an appropriation of $15.00 be allowed to screen the win- dows and doors of the residential part of City Jail. There is an old sycamore ~ree on the eastern side of the court house yard that will be near to, and an obstruction to, the new building, and it will be also in the way of the probable new entrance to the yard. On motion~ the report was adopted, with the amendment adopted by the Common Council, namely, that the Committee be authorized to obtain modified plans and specifications to provide additional armory and storage facilities for Grimes Battery. Gentlemen:-- Your Fire Committee respectfully reports herein concerning the following matters referred to the Joint Fire Committee April 9-lB-16, and March 1E- l9, 191~: Referred by Common Council April 9-1Eth. To give to the Finance Committee information concerning the following bills, which were held up for lack of apDropriation or because they exceeded l/lB of the appropriation allowed for same: W. F. Robertson, $5.05; E~re~a Fire Hose Co.~ $~.80; W..R. Walker, $1.00; M. C. Lmlly Co., $9.45. Progress as to same. Advisability of a safety net for the Fire Department~ at a cost of $1~5.00, out of funds left over from sale of horses. It is recommended that the safety net be purchased, and paid for out of amount ~u~ued back to the City from sale of engine horses last year. Advisability of building a hose tower in the Park View engine yard, at a cost of $150.00. It is recommended that such hose tower be built, at the cost named. To consider the purchase of a wash pave for cleaning off engines. It is recommended that a wash pave be purchased for the Park View engine house, not in excess of $10.00. · at~a cost Three nozzles for fire engines, at a cost of $~5.00. It is recommended that said amount be allowed ,for same. Three valves for fire engines, at a cost of $150.00. It is recommended that said amount be allowed for the purpose. To consider the advisability of putting a fire engine in the Fourth Ward. Referred by Board of Aldermen April 16th. (With Finance Committee). Advisability of placing glass fronts in all fire-alarm boxes ~nd keeping the wa- ter in boilers of engines warm. The Committee adheres to its former recommendation in regard to same, namely, that we do not deem it necessary to have glass fronts in fire-alarm boxes or to keep water in boilers of en- gines warm.
