<br /> A communication was received from the Chief of the Fire Department, in reply to notification
<br />given him July 19th tha~ paid men of the C~hambers Fire Company had~been granted permission to go with
<br />said Company on a trip North, sub,est to approval of Chief of the Fime Department; and also that the
<br />Superintendent of the Fire-Alarm System had been granted a five day leave of absence, with consent
<br />of the Chief~
<br /> He said that he had given his approval of said mattezS, and further recommended an appro-
<br />oriation of $1~.00 to pay a substitute filling the position of Superintendent of the Fire-Alarm Sys-
<br />tem while on his leave of absence.
<br /> On motion, the communication was ordered to file, and the reco~uended appropriation was re-
<br />ferred to the Finance Committee.
<br />
<br /> A request ~as read from the Superintendent of Public Schools for°an appropriation of $11~000.00
<br />to complete school buildings and an appropriation of $~,000o00 to sewer the Cooke street school.
<br /> On motion, the request was referred to the Finance Committee.

<br /> A communication was received from Mr. E. L. Lash, in which he stated that he ~esired to purchase
<br />the "Jail Lot,3 ~ud would make a reasonable bid for s~me if the City will conside~ selling the lot.
<br /> ~r. Nontague said he objected to sale of the "Jail Lot" ~Luder any condition and moved that
<br />the proposition be not entertained.
<br /> Nr. Davis moved to amend to refer the matter to the Public Property Committee.
<br /> The ~mendment by Mr. Davis was adopted.

<br /> A petition was read from the Secretary of the Union Fire Company that saidCompany be allowed
<br />to attend the Virginia State Firemen's Association to be held Amgust ~?-~8-P~9, 191~ and permission
<br />was granted the COmpany t* attend the Association.
<br />
<br /> Mr. Montague moved to refer to Street Cmmmittee the advisability of paving the roadway of Fifth
<br />street, from Jefferson to Fay~t~e. The motion was adopted.
<br />
<br /> Mr. Williams moved to refer to Street Committee the advisability of paving the west side of Arm-
<br />strong street, from Glasgow to Holladay; south side of Leckie street, from Armstrong to Butle=; and
<br />south side of "A" street, from Cooke ~o Armstrong. The motion was adopted.
<br />
<br /> Er. Davis moved that the Public Property Committee be instructed to furnish lights zo City Of-
<br />ficers in the Ferry building. The motion was adopted.
<br />
<br /> By the same, to refer to Finance Committee an appropriation of $3.90, out of Cemetery contingent
<br />/%uud, and $16.10 left over from appropriation for new hydrants, for repairing wall of the Cedar Grove
<br />cemetery. The motion was adopted.

<br /> Markham offered the following resolution, which was referred to the Ordinance Committee to
<br />an ordinance to cover same:
<br />"Resolved, That all men employed twelve consecutive months to
<br />streets in the five old Nards of the City shall be granted a ~sn day leave of absence annual-

<br /> Mr. Privstt moved to refer to Street Committee the advisability of paving Chestnut street, from
<br />South to Glasgow. The motion was ad~oted.

<br /> By the same, to refer the following matters ~o Public Property Committee: Distribution of Ci~y
<br />Offices in the "Municipal Building;" advisability of putting desks in the new Council Chamber; ad-
<br />%~sability of refitting the present Council Chamber and Clerk's Office for other City officers.
<br /> The motions were adopted.

<br /> By the same, to inst~act the Ordinance Committee ~o bring in an ordinance changing the name of
<br />Chestnut street to Market street. The motion was adopted.

<br /> By the same, ~o refer to the Street Committee the advisability of bringing in a recommendation
<br />that where sidewalks are laid on paved streets by owners~under direction of the City Engineer, on
<br />streets now having no sidewalks, that one-half the cost be ho=neby the City, provide~ suchcost does
<br />not exceed the prices the City is paying for the s~me class ofwork. The motion was adop~ed.

<br /> By the same, to refer to Light Committee .~he better lighting of Chestnut street~ from Glasgow
<br />to South; a~d to refer to Public Property Committee the advisability of removing ~ne fence s_round
<br />the court house yard, and providing seats for use of the public on the cou~t house lawn.
