Brinkley of Grimes Battery, enclosing letters <br />from several military officials of Virginia, in regard to the condition of Grimes Battery and the <br />necessity of improving same. <br /> Mr. Montague moved that the communications be referred to the Finance Committee with ur- <br />gent request to try to provide lt~nde for mmintenan~e of the Battery. <br /> ~Mr. Davis moved to amend that thi~ body concur in action of the Common Council August i~t~ <br />that is, that a statement of the Finance Committee in regard to financial condition of the City be <br />sent ~o the Captain of said Battery. The amendment was adopted. <br /> <br /> Mr. Murry referred to the pavement on upper High street as being obstructed by action of the <br />Board on JuSy 15th when it failed to concur with a resolution by the Common Council in regard to <br />same~ and moved that the Board rescind its last action with regard to said pavement of High street <br />and concur with the Common Council in rescinding action in requiring the paving of said street to <br />begin at Chestnut street and proceed westward, and leave mat~er to the discretion of the Street Com- <br />mittee~ with the understanding that when the work is finished within the appropriation for same, no <br />gap or unfinished portion of the stree~ in the vicinity of Chestnut street will exist. <br /> The motion was adopted, and by the following vote: <br /> Ayes~-Williams, Langhorne, <br /> Ballentine, idams~ Privett, Montague, Davis, Murry~ Pi le~ <br /> Nays-Markham, 1. <br /> <br /> Mr. Montague moved that the Street <br />the proposition to run its oars regularly until 1 o'ctock a.m. The motion was adopted. <br /> <br /> Mr. Davis moved to refer to Finance Committee for an appropriation of $500.00 annually <br />porting the Portsmouth Orphan Asylum.
