<br /> Section 137, to read-- "Any person, firm or co~poration who shall engage in the business of
<br />supplying gas for illuminating or fuel purposes, one-half of one per cent from gross receipts of

<br />of supplying water through pipes or mains~ one-half of one per cent from gross receipts of same."
<br />
<br /> Section 149, added to read-- "The tax on the foregoing named businesses or occupations
<br />shall be~ for the time of one year, except where otherwise specifica21y set ~forth."

<br /> There was presented also a recommendation from the Mayor to double the taxon express com-
<br />panies for failure to deliver in the Sixth and Seventh Wards.
<br /> Whereupon, Mr. Cooke. moved to reconsider the action just taken on section 59 with regard
<br />to express company wagons. The motion was adopted.
<br /> Mr. Johnson then moved that the request of the Eayor concerning said wagons be granted.
<br /> After some discussion of the matter, the request was not granted~ and the tax on said wa-
<br />gons was retained at $!0.00 ~ach.

<br /> Finally, the proposed "Ordinance,. as amended, was adopted and by the following vote:

<br /> The Finance Committee recommended also an appropriation of $1,000.00 for repair of asphalt

<br /> The Annexation and Ordinance Committees, to whom was referred on April 9th for preparation,
<br />an ordinance to annex Port Norfolk and Pinnere Point to the City, submitted the following:

<br /> On motion, said ordinance was adopted, and by the following vote:

<br />Mr.. Brinson moved that the joint committees on Annexation be continued, and that they be
<br />empowered to take steps at once in the matter of annexation of Port Norfolk and Pinners Point.
<br /> The motion was adopted.
<br />
<br /> By the same, that the Council petition the Judge of the Hustings Court to refuse to g~ant
<br /> a license for the sale of liquor in the proposed annexed territory. The motion was adopted.
<br />
<br /> Mr. Czqss spoke of an un~us~ burden imposed on citizens by the Water Company in matter of
<br /> charges for water in houses, tapping of mains, Ac. He cited one case in which two small fami-
<br /> lies living in a house had had their water rates nearly doubled for what had formerly been charg-
<br /> ed for one family. -~
<br /> On motion, the matter was referred to the Water Committee, with City Attornev, to look
<br /> into rights of the Water Company in the premises. ~
<br />
<br /> Mr. Johnson called attention to the fact that several times of late negroes had been buried
<br /> at expense of the City, although they had carried life insurance policies, and that these insur-
<br /> ances were collected by relatives and the money pocketed.
<br /> He moved that the matter be referred to the Almshouse Committee for investigation.
<br /> The motion was adopted.
<br />
<br /> Mr. Tyler moved that the Street Committee be instructed to notify the Seaboard Air Line
<br />Railway and Virginia Railway & Power Companies to begin work for placing their tracks on First
<br />street in condition for paving their portion of work, and that the Street Committee advertise
<br />for bids to pave said street.
<br /> Th~ Chair ruled the motion of Mr. T~ler out of order, because the funds should be pro-
<br />vided for the paving before other s~eps can be taken for same.

<br /> On'motion of Mr. Oooke~ the Finance Committee was instructed to consider an appropriation
<br />to prov~ide a bell for the Seventh Ward engine house.

<br /> A delegation was present from the Lincoln Fire Company, and on motion, the rules were sus-
<br />pended to hear from said delegation.
<br /> Mr.. Montague, heading the delegation, urged the need of a fire engine 'in the Fourth Ward.
<br /> On motion, the proposition to put a fire engine in the Fourth Ward was referred to
<br />Fire Committee.

<br />the request of the Seventh Wa~d Board, Mr. Brinson moved that award be made to Lewis
<br />for laying 18,000 sq. yds., more or less, of pavement in said Ward, at $1.$O per sq. yd.
