May 14, 191~;

Referred by Board of Aldermen April i6th.

To investigate the whole matter of lighting High street with either electricity or gas~
and also the manner of lighting.
We have conferred with the officials of the Gas Company concerning the lighting of
High street with gas, but they declined to advance any proposition for same. The Committee~
therefore, recommends that High street be lighted with electricity, _and in the following man-
ner:
Fifty-six (56) five cluster sixty candle-power lights be installed, at $4.00 per light,
and to burn until 12 o'clock' midnight; and fifty-six (56) lights of ~ame ca~dt~e-~ower~ cne in
each cluster to burn all night. The yearly cost for this lighting wzll be $B~128.00 and the
cost of fixtures for same, to be borne by the City, will not exceed $1,554.00, including in-
stallation.
It is recommended that a contract be made with the Virginia Railway & Power Company
for a period of five years for the above manner of lighting, at a total ocs% a~ stated.

Advisability of lights at corners of B and Hatton, Chestnut and Queen, Chestnut and Bart,
and ~ythe and Third streets. Progress.

(Signed). W. Hedges Baker~
Chairman C. C.
Mr. Brinson objected to the report of the-Committee because, as he stated, the cost of
fifty-six (56) of the single lights after 12 o'clock midnight would be out of all proportion
to cost of said li ght~ before midnight~ and, therefore, he desired to offer the following amend-
ment to the Committee's recommendation:
That there be installed fifty-six (56) clusters of
electric lights, five (~) lights to a cluster, at $4.00 per light per year~ or a total cost
of $1,120.00 per year; ~aid clusters to be lighted ~t the same time as other stree~ lamps, and
kept lighted until lB O'Giock midnight; and that a contract for the same be made with the Vir-
ginia Railway & Power Company to supply such lights until AugUStLI~,~lg2G, when ~he present
contract with this Company for electric li~hting expires.
The amendment was adopted, and then the report~ as amended, by the following vote:
