<br /> "The meeting was called to order by Mr. Hawks, Chairman, with I. T. Van Patten, acting Sec-
<br />retary.
<br /> "Mr. Hawks explained his reason for calling the members together by stating that as a mem-
<br />ber of the Council, he felt it was his duty to see if anything ought to be dons, or could be
<br />done, looking to the possibility of getting the Atlantic Coast Line R. R., Southern Railway and
<br />the Seaboard Air Line Railway,'to jointly construct a Union Terminal Station and Office Build-
<br />ing on this side of the river, and invited discussion and suggestions.
<br /> "After considering the matter from different points of view, examining maps and making many
<br />and variCus'suggestions, the sense of the meeting took shape in the followin~ resolution offered
<br />by Mr. L. H. Davis:
<br /> "Resolved, that it is the belief of this committee that the ideal location
<br />for a union station and office building is at or near the present site of the Seaboard Air Line
<br />R~ilway office building, and that the mutual interests of the Railroads and the city of Ports-
<br />mouth, will be served by the use of the said location;
<br /> "~urther, that we pledge our best co-operation in carrying forward the work of development
<br />of this proposition, and that the secretary of this committee be requested to transmit copies
<br />of this resolution to the proper officers of the said railroads.
<br /> On motion of Mr. Wool, the resolution by Mr. It~vis was amended as follows- or rather offer-
<br />ed the following substitute-
<br /> "Resolve~, that it is the belief of this ~ommittee that it would be
<br />mutually advantageous to the Atlantic Coast Line R~ R. Co., the Southern Railway Co., and the
<br />Seaboard Air Line Railway Co., and to the city of Portsmouth, for the said roads to establish a
<br />Union Passenger Terminal Station and Office Building, at some proper location in the city of
<br />Portsmouth~ and that this committee wilt be glad mo consider with the representatives of the said
<br />roads, any definite proposition that they might please to submit ~looking to the same.
<br /> "~eso~ved further, that the secretary of this committee" '+ be requested to transmit copies of
<br />this resolution to the proper officers of the said roads.
<br /> "A vote being taken on the substitute or amendment it was declared lost, four to one.
<br />Wool voting aye, Messrs. Davis, Sherwood, Reed and Hatt~r voting no).
<br /> "The Davis resolution was then passed by practically the same majority, is- four to one.
<br />(The Chair no~ voting and Mr. Hall having no vote).
<br /> "On motion adjourned subject to call of the Chairman.

<br /> First. Matters adopted by the Common Council May 14th and referred to the Board of Alder-
<br />men for concurrence.
<br />
<br /> To instruct the Clerk to send to the Mayor a copy o~ report of the Committee appointed to
<br />investigate the "Ferry Bill."
<br />
<br />Concurred in.
<br />
<br /> The Board of Aldermen concurred also in all recommendations of Committees adopted by the
<br />Common Council May 14th~ except the question of pay of three additional paid men for the Fire
<br />Department, and the placing ~f glass fronts in fire-alarm boxes, which said questions were re-
<br />ferred back to the Fire Committee for further consideration.

<br /> The appropriation of $95.00 to the Fraternal Order of.Eagles was referred to a Conference
<br />Committee.
<br />
<br /> Second. Matters adopted by the Board of Aldermen ~ay Elst a~nd referred to the Common Coun-
<br />cil for concurrence.
<br />
<br /> To appoint a Conference Committee to consider the appropriation of .~9o.00 to the Fraternal
<br />Order of Eagles to assist in e=tertaining a convention of that organization to meet in this City
<br />June llth.
