Baker). <br /> The following vetoes of the Mayor, ordered ~o lie on the tabl~ at the regular meeting July <br />9th, were now called up: $1,000.00 to pave North street, between Crawford and Water, out of ap- <br />propriation already made~ for Street Paving; $8,455.00 to~pave~First street, out of appropriation <br />already made for Street Baying; and ~o make award to F. J. McGuire to lay ~0,000 sq. yds., more <br />or less, of pavement in the Seventh Ward, at $1.17 per sq. yd. <br /> <br /> The vetbes having been read, and the reasons therefor (see records Common Council, page <br />107), the Chair put the question, "Shall the action of the body on. June 14th concer~i~g said <br />resolmtions stand as recorded, notwithstanding the veto of the Mayor to the contrary.. <br /> Whereupon, the action of the Common Council on June 14th in adopting said resolutions, <br />was sustained, and by the following votes: <br /> <br /> On North street and Fi, et streat: <br /> Ayes-~Oorbitt, Hall, Parrish, Hanvey, Dewson, <br /> Baker, Johnson, Heath, Brinson, Cross, Tyler, Hawks, Hntehins~ 1S. <br /> Nays-Moore~ 1. <br /> <br /> On Making Award to F. J. MoGuire: <br /> Ayes-~Corbitt, Hall, Parrish, Hanvey, Dewson, <br /> Baker, Johnson, Heath, Brinson, Cross, Tyler, Hawks~ Hutchins, Parker, Beisel, <br /> Cooke~ 16. <br />~Nays-Moore, 1. <br /> <br /> Mr. Brinson called attention to the fact that the passage over the MaYor's veto of the two <br /> items in regard to paving of North street and paving of First street made the recommendation of <br /> the Finance Cormnittee in regard ~o same unnecessary, and he moved a suspension of the rules to <br /> eliminate these two items from the report of said Committee. <br /> The motion was adopted, and the sections referred to were ~liminate~. <br /> Then the report~of the Finance Committee, as amended, was adopted, and by the follow- <br /> ing vote: <br /> Ayes--Corbitt, Hall, Parrish, Hanvey, Dewson, Moore, Baker, Johnson, Heath~ <br /> Br~nson, Cross, Tyler, Hawks, Hutchins, Parker, Beisel, Cooke, 17.~ <br /> <br /> Fourth. Reports of Officers and other unfinished business. <br /> <br /> The regular reports.of Officers for July, 19lb were presented and were ordered to take the <br />.usual course. <br /> <br /> The Auditor made the following report: <br /> "Portsmouth, Va., Aug. 13, ~91E. <br /> "Presidents & Members of the' <br /> Board of Aldermen & Common Council. <br /> <br /> "Gentlemen:-~ <br /> "I have received the land books from the Commissioner of the Revenue and de- <br /> livered the same to the City Collector. ~ <br /> "Below you will find the amount of taxes: <br /> <br /> General Tax, City, $1~703o9~ <br /> " " Sixth Ward~ <br /> , 7,876.76 <br /> " ", Seventh Ward~ 7,771.00 <br /> School ", City, 27,~83.63 <br /> $165,635.S1. <br /> "Yours truly, <br /> "T~ Hume, <br /> City Auditor." <br /> <br /> On motion~ the Auditor was directed to charge u~ to the City Collector the assessments on <br /> the books of the Commissioner of Revenue~ (Mr. Cross excused from further attendance.). <br /> <br /> The "Traffic 0rdina~ce," ordered to lie on the table July 9t~, was taken up, discussed, <br /> and adopted:b~ the following vote: <br /> Ayes--Hal/, Parrish, F~nvey, Dewson, N00re~ <br /> Johnson, Heath, Brinson~ C~0ke~ Tyte~, Hawks, Hutchins, Parker, Beisel, 14. <br /> Nays~Baker~ 1. <br /> (Mr. Corbitt excused from voting). <br /> <br /> Mr. Brinson stated that he was not present at the last meeting of the body, or he would <br />have opposed the action in regard to appointing a Board of Arbitrators to settle the question <br />between the-City proper and the Sixth and Seventh Wards as to who shouldpay for rent of. water <br />hydrants in said Wards.
