<br /> A request was received from the City Treasurer to renew notes to amoun~ of $48,164.49,

<br /> A communication was read from the President of the Portsmouth, Berkley & Suffolk ~Vater Com-
<br />pany, requesting the appointment of a committee to meet with representatives of Said Company,
<br />looking to an amicable adjustment of all features of the .water question."
<br /> On motion, the said matter was referred to a special committee of five, three from
<br />the Common Council and two from the Board of Aldermen.
<br /> A petition of Friends Church to be allowed to use the playground on Wythe street to hold
<br />revival meetings:~for two weeks from May 18th was referred to the Park ~ommission.
<br /> A communication was read from Major Commanding T. M. Wortham, First Battalion Field
<br />lery, Va. Vol., in regard to inadequate armory facilities afforded Grimes Battery of this City.
<br /> At this point, Mr. Laylor~ noted that there were several representatives present from
<br />Grimes Battery and he moved a suspension of the rules in order that they might state the needs
<br />of the Battery. The motion was adopted.
<br /> Several of the representatives then spoke and urged an immediate appropriation for the
<br />Battery, if the City desired to retain the guns and equipments here. l~hereupon, on motion of
<br />Mr. Burgess, it was resolved to appoint a special committee to consider a suitable appropriation
<br />fo~ enlarging and repairing ~he Gun Room and, on suggestion of the Chair, the Committee to make
<br />report at the next Joint Session of the two branches of Co,mci!.
<br /> On suggest, io~ ~f Mr. Hutchins, the Committee was to ascertain the cost of improvements
<br /> and report; and on suggestion of ~. Joe. S. Moore, to take into consideration also the cost
<br /> of galvanized iron structure, in addition to the present building, instead of b~iok.

<br /> Mr. F~uvey moved to refer to Street Committee and City Engineer the advisability of having
<br /> a new topographical map of the City~ and to report cost of same. The motion was adopted.
<br />
<br /> On motion of Mr. Baldwin, the attention of the Street Committee was called to condition of
<br /> Scott Creek BridEs.
<br />
<br /> Mr. Jos. s. Moo~e stated that the approach to the Hospital Bridge needed immediate atten-
<br /> tion because of the ~late high tide washing aw.ay the ground to the appr_oach, &o_., and moved that
<br /> an appropriation of $195. tc make needed ~repazrs there be referred to ~'inance ~ommittee.
<br /> The motion was adopted.

<br /> Mr. Hanvey called attention to th~= fact that lights had been changed in the City Market
<br />before the Finance Committee, to whom the matter of lights had been referred, ~uld make a de-
<br />finite report as to same; and he moved that the Public Property e~amine further into the matter
<br /> of lighting said Market House. The motion was adopted.

<br /> Mr. Herbert stated that the Union Fire Compa.ny is the only Fire Company in the City without
<br /> a bath tub and he moved that an appropriation of $~0. to furnish such bath tub be referred to
<br /> the Finance Committee. The motion was adopted.
<br />
<br /> Mr. Joe. S. Moore stated that the Street Committee had received an offer of purchase of
<br />the City steam roller by a firm in Cincinnati, Ohio; and he moved that the Committee be autho-
<br />rized to fix a price for the steam roller and to sell-the same. The motion was a~opted.
<br />
<br /> On motion cf Mr. Montague, the advisability of paying laborers in the City Cemeteries the
<br />same wages ~s are paid.street hands, was referred to the Cemetery Committee.
<br />
<br /> Nv. F~nvey stated that the City banks hereafter wOuld require that proposed notes on them
<br />be ~ertified by the City Attorney as having been made legally, and he moved that the Finance
<br />Committee be authorized to arrange for obtaining necessary data to be furnished the City banks
<br />by the City.Attorney concerning said notes. The motion was adopted~
