<br /> The Mayor retu~ed his approval of the following matters adopted by the two branches of
<br />City Council June l?th~and July 13-21, 1915:
<br /> An appropriation of $1,000.00, out of Six~h~Ward Bond Account, for work on C~zuty street,
<br />said~work to be done under the di~reetio~tcf.-~he Street Oommittee.
<br /> To authorize the Cit~ Treasurer to borrow $20,000. to meet Current Expenses for July, 1915~
<br /> An appropriation of $300.00, or as much of the sam~ as may be necessary, to screen and re-
<br />pair the meat and fish markets.
<br /> A special appropriation of $250. to sewer Griffin street 225 feet east from Washington.
<br /> To instruct the Auditor to cancel warrants on The Peoples F~nk to amount of $~,656.?~, in
<br />order to make his books agree with those of the Treasurer.
<br /> To pay in November, 1915, $695,58 for salary of the Judge of the Cmre~mt Court and $t,~50.
<br />for salary of the Judge~of the Corporation Cour~t, .ye. ar beginning February let, 1916. To-make available $~00. allowed in the Buagem x'or repair of "Court Room."
<br /> To make available the unexpen.ded balance~ of the $~00. allowed in the BudEe~ for Horses."
<br /> To make available the appr~prmation of $189. allowed in the Budget for "Hydraulic Hose
<br />pander."
<br /> To pay a bill of Frank L. Crocker to amount of $~00.00, for services to the City in the suit
<br /> of Margaret Lee vs. the City of Portsmouth.
<br /> To pay compromise bill in the case of the Eastern Dredging Co. vs. the City of Portsmouth
<br /> for $8,000. plus $100. as the City's part for half of court expenses, said amo~int to be paid
<br /> through the Board of Water Oommissioners.
<br /> To grant the Auto Supply Station permission to place a sidewalk gasoline pump and storage
<br /> tank at 107 1/4 High street, the work to be done under the s~toervision of the City Engineer and
<br /> Chief of the Fi~e Department.
<br /> That the City Engineer be instructed to prepare a map of the City's natural drainage, de-
<br /> fining the City's holdings in the same, after which the Board of Harbor Commissioners be request-
<br /> ed to establish the drainage lines for the City in accordance with said map.
<br /> Award~ made to the Portsmouth Coal & Ice Co. ~o ~euppty t.he Sewerage Power House for' one year
<br /> with ?00 tons of Pocahontas steam coal, run of the min~, at $~.04 per ton.
<br /> To settle the suit of B. J. Farmer vs. the City of Portsmouth for damages to his property
<br /> on Pearl et. rest on a basis cf $3?5. plus costs, making a total of $356.85.
<br /> (With City Attorney, for consideration) Unnecessary noises made by trains of the S. A. L,
<br /> Ry. in their operation on north Crawford street.
<br /> Referred to Finance Committee with power to act as to an appropriation. Order of Court ex-

<br /> The regular reports of Officers for the month of July, 19lB, were presented and were
<br />doted to take the~usual course.

<br />NEW BUSINESS.
<br />
<br /> A communication was received from the Board of Health notifying Council of the election
<br />of Dr. Joe. Gri~e aa City Bacteriologist for t~e term of two yea~s and ~eq~eeting confirmation
<br />of said election.
<br /> On motiom~ S~id~o~fi~mation was ~eferred~to~a]Jpint Session of the two branches of
<br />City ~ouncil.
<br />
<br /> A communication was read from Grimes Battery expressing appreciation of. the. Battery
<br />the support of the .m~vement to obtain a .$2,000. aDpropriation for an extension of its present
<br />gun room. On motion, the communication was orbs=ed to file.
<br />
<br /> A bill of the NatiOnal Printing Company to amount of $4.00, for application blanks furnish-
<br />ed the Plumbing Board, was referred to the Finance Committee.
<br />
<br /> A bond of The Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. of Virginia, dated .July 8t~ 1915, was
<br />referred to the Finance Committee with the City Attorney.
<br />
<br /> A petition was read from the Park View Engine Co. to use the playground on Wythe street
<br />for a carnival to be held the week of September 20th or ~Sth, and to ~ exe~pt from payment of
<br />a license tax thereon.
<br /> On motion, said petition was referred to the Park-Commission with power to act.
<br />
<br /> Mr. Cart stated that ~he Judge ha~ealled his attention to the necessity for stopping leaks
<br />in the court h~use roof and on motion, said matter was refer~ed to'the Public Property
<br />Committee.
<br />
<br /> On motion of Mm. Oarr, Zhe advisability of a motorcycle for the Police.Force was referred
<br />to Finance and Police committees ~ointly.
<br />
<br /> On motion of Mr. Wilson, the matter of. fttrnishing free t~x~ books to:Dupi!s of the public
<br />schools w~s referred ~oFinance and Public Property & Schoola~ommtttees jointly.
<br />
<br /> Mr. Browne moved to refer to Ordinance Committee to regulate the use of signal horns on au-
<br />tomobiles. The motion was adopted.
