<br />At a reguls~r meeting of the Common Council February 8th there were present:

<br />The minutes of the adjourned re~la~ meeting J~nuary 14th were read a~d were approved.
<br />
<br /> At this point, ~. Burgess moved that the r~les be suspended in order to offer m reso-
<br />lution in connection with the Portsmouth, Berkley & Suffolk Water Company, which resolution it
<br />was necessary to pass at once because it required Legislative action, and the Legislature has~
<br />but a short time ~o remain in session~
<br /> The motion to suspend the rules was ~dopted.
<br /> Then the following resolution was re~i smd ~fter some discussion, it was adopted:

<br /> "~-REAS, your^~ommittee has for some time been considering the advis~oility o~ either
<br />completing the Municipal~ater Pls~ut, now under construction, purchasing the present pla~t of
<br />the Portsmouth, Berkley & Suffolk Water Co. or executing a new contract with the said Ports-
<br />mouth, Berkley & Suffolk Water Co., if said new contract can b$ mmde upon a basis more advan-
<br />tageous~to the City of Portsmouth s~ud the citizens thereof, thau~to either complete and put in-
<br />to operation, the Municipal ~ater Pl~r~t, or the purchase of the Portsmouth, Bsrkley & Suffolk
<br />Wmter Plant, and
<br /> "WHEREAS, It appears that. the 0it? o~ Portsmouth is without the necessary authority
<br />under its present Chs~rter, to execume such new contract with thePortsmouth, Berkley & Suffolk
<br />Water Co.~ should it be deemed expedient to execute such new contract, therefore,
<br /> "BE iT RESOLVED, That the City Attorney be instructed to draw such ~mer~iments to
<br />the present Charter of the City of Portsmouth as will give it the necessary authority to exe-
<br />cute a new contract with the Portsmouth, Berkley & So~ffolk Water Co., said amendments to pro-
<br />vi~e for the sale by the City of Portsmouth, of the present Municipal Water Ca~l and real es-
<br />tate and said new contract to provide for the purchase of said Municipal Water C~nal ~nd Real
<br />Estate by the said Portsmouth, Berkley & Suffolk Water Co., by private sale upon a majority
<br />vote of the City Council,~
