October 17~, l~16. At a meeting of The Council October !Tth~hsre were present: Messrs--Osoie Dashiell, J. T. Hanvey, C. H. Herbert, W. D. Morgan, Jno. A. Sortie, Chas. T. Panfish, 6. The minutes of the meeting October 3rd were read and were approved. The following reports of Departments were presented and were read: Public Service-- Referred October 3rd. Recommitted. A pet'ition of J. Thcs._ Hedges for relief from the mamm~er i~ which the City is draining the surface water off the southeast corner of Washing~ca~ ~ee~' sad Race avenue east on Race avenue from the culvert under the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. We h~ve =econsidbred this matter and report that, while, in our opinion, more drainage work is needed in this lo.cality, yet it is not advisable to attempt more at present and~ there- fore, recommend as previously recommended, That the sidewalk on Washington' street and curbing on Race avenue be raised at this point sad that the remainder of necessary work be provided for in in the Budget of 1917. Attention called to the condition of the drain at the corner of South and Dinwiddie streets. We report that this matter has been'attended to. (With Law Department) Advisability of discontinuing the Sixth and SeVenth Ward Local Boar~s of Imp~ovement~ We have considered this m~tter with the Department of L~w and it is recommended that the Sixth and Seventh Ward Boa~ds berequested to,appear before The Council at a subsequent.meet- ing of same for a discussion of this matter. Referred September 19th. (With Mayor) To take up with the Seaboard Air Line-Ry. Co. the lowering of its tracks on Crawford street. We ~eport that-we have discussed this matter with lit. W. L. Sodden, Vice-President of said Eompauy, and he agrees with the Department that these tracks should be lowered a~ the cor- ners of London, Glasgow, sad North streets, sad to be boarded along the tracks at these points for convenience of vehicle travel, all of the work to be done to the satisfaction of the City Engineer° Previously Referred. The matter of removal of the Switch track of the Seaboard Air Line Railway Co~ on upper High street, extending from its property to the property of H. L. Alexander. lit. Sodden has agreed for his Company to remove this switch, with the proviso that a track may be subsequently laid across High street and parallel with the old track ru~ning into London street. Public Property-- Referred September 12th. A communication from the Clerk of the Market calling attention to the vegetable market, and requesting early attention to same. As ~uthorized ~o do, we have advertised for-bids to supply the Public Buildings of the City with coal and wood for the season i~l.~l~t and have received the following bids therefor: Coal: (2,000 lbs. to the ton): FrOm: Portsmouth Coal & Ice Co., Anthracite, Pocahontas Steam, $7.30 per ton.
