<br /> Seventh: Statement that the letter which he h~$ received f~om N~r. F. J. NcGtuire wl~h
<br />regard to ~ettlement for upper High street pavement is unsatisfactory.; and recommending, before
<br />aod~pting M~. McGuire!s offer of $1~$00, as full settlement, the su~t now pending be prosecut-
<br />ed. However, he recommends that if ~. ~cGuire will agree to pay the City $2,000. as a compro-
<br />mise, same be acce~ted.
<br /> Whereupon, ~on motion, the ~tter was referred to the City M~nager and City Attorney~
<br />the City ~ttorney to bring suit against ~r. McGuire if he will not compromise the suit for
<br />$2, o00..00.

<br /> Eighth: Attaching a petition from the firemen employed at ~he Sewerage Power House for
<br />an increase of payto $3.50 per day.
<br /> On motion, said petition was referred t~ the Finance Department.

<br /> Ninth: Submitting various recommendations from the-Superintendent of the Water Deparment.
<br /> On motion, the recommendation that the name of "Portsmouth ~ater Department~' be designa-
<br />ted for same, was adopted; and fu~t~er, it was resolved that f~nds from said Department be de-
<br />posited e~ly among the banks of .the City.
<br /> ~h~-recommendation that Section 32V of ~he City Ordinances be amended to read as follows
<br />was referred to the Department of Law:
<br /> ~The service pipe must be placed not less than sixteen
<br />inches below the s~rface of the ground, .and in all cases be so arranged as to prevent its
<br />breakage from freezing; every se~viee pipe extend~ug from the main to the faucet of the first
<br />~loor of the house shall not be less than three-quarters in~he~ inside dismaeter.~
<br /> Then the other recommendations were referred to the Finance Dtpartment and Special Water
<br />Committee.

<br /> Tenth: Stating that, at a conference held in the C~nci! Chamber on th~ llth, the re-
<br />routing of street car~ was presented and the conference was immediately advised by the Railway
<br />Company that they wo~Id not consider a re-routing program unless, an increase in fa~e was first
<br />granted$ that the City's representatives informed the Cempaz~ that we would not reco~m~end an
<br />increase in fs~eS under the existing ¢o~itions of their equil~ent, tracks and service rendered$
<br />and that the City Man~ger has w~itten the Board of Control of N~folk te investig~te the request
<br />of' the ~. S. Housing Oorporatica~ a~d citizens that more cars be i~ernished, due to the fact~
<br />the said Board of Control now ~egUlates the traffic l~ndled by the Railway Compa~,
<br /> 9n motion, the matter was referred to the Department of Public Service.

<br /> Eleventh~ Statmng,' ~ that as a result of his trip to Washier?ton in regard to the Government
<br />c.ompl.ettng the housing projects as C~addo~ck and Truxton, the Committee is grat. ifie~; that al-
<br />t~hot~h n? actl?n was taken on. ar~ of.the housing developments, if they could J~dge human nat~e,
<br />the Committee ms of the ~nanlmous spanish that the claims of PortsmoutJa for the continuance of
<br />housing Projects will meet with favorable consideration and the projects will be completed as
<br />at present curtailed.

<br /> Twelfth: Advising that the Sewerage Department has been cor~ronted with a break in the
<br />sewer at the corner of Webster avenue and Leckie street, which has been very difficult to handle;
<br />~t .this stoppage has exzste for the past week or ten days and that the Department is still
<br />labGring at t~is Particular point.
<br /> On motion, the communication was ordered to be filed.

<br /> Thirteenth: Submitting a petition of the Superi~_tendent of Street Cleaning and Garbage
<br />Removal fc~ ~ salary to be increased to $125. per month; and same was referred to the Finance
<br />m~d Public Service departments.

<br />Portsmouth side have received revised plans which show a 30 ft. space adjacent to the Seaboard
<br />Air Line passenger depot in High Street extending from ~ater Street east to the front of the
<br />wharf. Said space-is provided for.i~g~ess and.egress to the wharf on the south side of High
<br />street adjacent to the water front.

<br /> ~ It appears that the ~aboard At~ Line E~a~ claims the~ right of High street east of
<br />Water. street, notwithstanding the fact thetfez~y is constructed for highway purposes.

<br /> ~In an old agyeement now on fite~ in the,Clerk of the C~e~t~'s office, the Seaboard Ai~
<br />Line was granted permission to use a portion of Hi~ street for the Union Depot, orovid~d the
<br />passenger trains of the Co,st Line, Southern and Seaboard to, minuted at this depot. This agree-
