A~.?.t~t !9th, 1919 <br /> <br /> A co~nhunication ~was read from certain ~e~§idents and property owners in the vicinity of <br />Dinwid~e and North streets calling the Council's attention to the fact that the pole and wires <br />of the Va. Ey. & Power Co. at the southwest corner o£ Dinwiddie and North streets h~e' be~n <br />struck by lightni~g a n~ber of times and is, unless somethim~ is done to remedy it,-a serious <br />menace to the property and lives of the Dersons in that vicinity. <br />The privilege of the floor was granted to ~[essrso F. L. Crocker and Jno. C. N2~meyen, <br />who asked the Co~ucil to require the Va. Ry. & Power Co. to remedy the condition at said corner. <br /> Whereupon, the City ~anager and City Attorney were instructed to i~_ave remedied at once <br />the condition complained of. <br /> <br /> ~. ~right offered the following resolution, which was adopted: <br /> ~'W~REAS, The Co~cil of <br />the City of Portsmouth by resolution leased and turned over to the Unite~d States Government <br />during the period of the late war the east ends of Lincoln and Henry streets, and <br /> <br /> ~REAS, The war has terminated and the necessity for the ~e of said street ends by <br />the Goverr~.ent has ceased, <br /> <br /> ~t~RE~0PJ~,. BE ~SOL'v~D by ~ne Co~ncil of the City of Portmuouth, That the salad lease <br />be and the same is hereby terminated, and the ~a~d street ends be declared' open to the oublic." <br /> <br /> ~. Herbert stated tb~t copies of the land books for the Eighth and Ninth ~ards would be- <br />delivered to the CoF~issione~ of the Reven~e in the next, few days; and it was moved that the <br />City Attomney be ~instructed to demand said books from the Clerk of NorfolkCoufl~y if same a~e <br />not delivered to the City by August ~Sth. Dea~s e~tled attention to the examination to be. prDvided for the Police and Fire De- <br />partments, statimg that the men did not think it fair that t~ me, who had been i~ the Depart- <br />ment for some years should be requ_red to take the examination. <br /> <br /> Mr. Herbert offered the following resolution, which was adopted: <br /> "BE IT RESOL%~D! by the <br />City Council of Portsmouth, That the construction of a new concrete road from Sixth A~e. on <br />Co~ty street to the Norfolk County line to cormect with the New State Roadway (~t:~is, necessary <br />that we connect this r~ad with the Cotu~ty), we therefor~ reCO-m~mend tl~t said ~0ad,be construct- <br />ed and the City ~,~ger enter into agreements similar to the two roads now being constructed; <br />and that the matter of Finance be meferred to the Department of Finance." <br /> <br /> Nm. ~ight s%a.ted that the Co~cil should endorse the efforts now beir~ put forth to <br />duce the ~mgh Cost o£ Living. <br /> <br />mo~lon, adjourned o <br /> <br /> <br />
