P. <br /> <br />SePtember 9, 1919 <br /> <br />49 <br /> <br />streets and s~dewalks be paved: paving Godwin street, frCm Glasgow to High, including sidewalks; <br />paving of sidewalks on Godwin street, from High to So~th, down South to 'Elm avenue; paving wal~- <br />way of High street, from Pearl to Ninth avenue; paving of Leckie st~eet, 'from Cooke to Webster~ <br />and down Webster to Anu; and paving of Wythe street, from First to '~o~t. <br /> On motion, the recommendation was referred to the Department of Finance and City NaZ~ge~. <br /> <br /> The chairman o~ the Department of Public Service reco~uended also ttiat the City ~nager have <br />Chestnut. street 8iled between tile Old Shell Road and 01d Deep Creek Road. <br /> On motion, said recommendation was referred to the Finance Department and the Cit~ Man, ger. <br /> <br /> The P~esident of the Council called attention to the fact that the lights in the City Market <br />and City'Narket Shed and on the street between'the two have never been c_h~_~ed from the 01d are <br />lights tO 400 candle power incs~descent light~s, as per agreement between the City and Va. Wright, <br /> Also the City Manager. <br /> <br />were present: <br /> <br />The minntes of the regular meeting September 9th were road-~nd were approved. <br /> <br />REPORTS <br /> <br />OF DEPARTmeNTS <br /> <br />No report <br /> <br />Public Service-- <br /> <br />Referred September 9th <br /> <br /> A request of the City Manager that an appropriation of $2,300. be made for'c~tting wee~s <br />filling and drair~lng dirt streets for the balance of the year. <br /> It is recommended that a special appropriation of $1,500. be allowed for same. <br /> <br /> Recommendation of the City Manager that an appropriation of $490. be allowed to purchase <br />two horses; also buggy and h~rness for the Superintendent of the Streets. <br /> it is recommended that a special appropriation be allowed to purchase the items named. <br /> <br />to <br /> <br />A contract with H. H. D-con, Inc., for construction 6f the concrete road from Sixth avenue <br />the new City limits on the extension of County street, or what is known as "Hodges Ferry Road." <br /> It is reco~uended that said contract be approved by the Co,oil. <br /> <br /> Reco~uendation of the City Manager that an appropriation of $125. be made to cover the cGst <br />of a mowzng machine. <br /> It is recommended that an appropriation to said amount be made for the p~rpose. <br /> <br /> A communication from the City Manager advisin~ that he ha's appointed inspectors for the <br />street improvement~, out of the appropriation already made for such improvements. <br /> It is reeo~ended that the City ~anager bo instructed to advise with the Departments <br />of Public Service and Finance as to the appointment of such inspectors. <br /> <br /> Rgco~endation of the City Manager that our representatives inthe State Legislature be re- <br />quested to amend o~ Charter by an Act creating a dock commission for the City of Portsmouth. <br /> Progress as to same. <br /> <br /> A co~m~unication from the City Manager ~oncerning request ~rom the Chief Engineer, S. A. L. <br />Ry., for extension~util Ap~il, 1920, of privilege for relaying one of its tracks across High <br />street. <br /> Progress. <br /> <br /> A communication from the City ~nager, attaching c~py of his letter to the Superintendent <br />of Streets notifying hi~ that the payroll~ for hie Depart~ent~ mus~ not exceed ~$800o per week <br />until extra provision is made for the maintenance. <br /> <br /> <br />
