<br />and were approved.

<br /> The following ordinance, which had been made the special Order of Business for this mee~-
<br />lng, was_taken'up and read:
<br /> Ordinance to Regulate the S~le of Ice.
<br />
<br /> Mr. Esleeok moved that the privilege of the fleer be gr~nted to any citizen present who
<br />may be interested in the~crdinance, but ne one responded.
<br />
<br /> Then ~ir. Brooks moved that the ordinance be adopted. Mr. White moved to amend, that the
<br />ordinance be amended te read ~s fo2lows: "Be it ordained by the Ceuncit ef the C~t~ ef P~rts-_
<br />mouth, Virginia, That all persons s~X1Xng ice by retail within the limits ~f the City ~f Forts
<br />mouth shall keep at their places ef business, and ~n their wa~ns, carts er other vehicles
<br />from which ice is sold, standard somles, by which ice sold by them shall be weighed, if so
<br />requested by the purchmser; and it shall be unlawful for an~ dealer ~r vender te f~l er re-
<br />fuse mo sell er deliver from wagons te any person in the City of Portsmouth demanding the same,
<br />within five pounds either ever er under the q~antlty ~f ice demanded, unless there shall be
<br />a reasonable cause for such failure or refusal, the consumer sh~!l be charged for the actual
<br />number ef pounds reo~iyed, each de~ler shall have painted on the side of his vehicle in letters
<br />not less than three (3~ inches in height the name of the dealer, together with the number of
<br />his wagon.
<br />
<br /> Any person violating any 'provision of th~s ordinance shall be liable tea fine of $10~00,
<br />reocverable before the Police Justice of ~o~tsmouth."

<br />ferred untll~the nex~ ~egular meeting of CoUncil, and the Clerk was instrudte~ te notify the
