"With reference to <br />petition of W. B. Sykes that he be paid $$30.65 for services during'period of his injuries <br />a~d hospital bill of $167.05, I beg to report as follows: <br /> <br /> On April 13th, Mr. Sykes responded to an alarm with apparatus of Engine ~o. No. 1 at <br />~:0~ P. M., being immediately dispatched to Norfolk where he remained until 2~45' A.M.' At <br /> ~.~ A. M. on morning of April l~th, the Department responded ~o an alarm from Station $321, <br />a second alarm later automacticallM bringing No. 1 Engine Company to the scene of the fire. <br />At this time, however, No. 1 Engine w~s out of service. Mr. Sykes and the other members of <br />Engine Co. No. t came to this second fire in the automobile of Engineer Earl Bowen. This au- <br />tomobile collided with Engine No. ~ a~ the co~ner of Washington and South Sts., result~ing <br />in the serious injury of ~ykes and~minor injuries to other men. <br /> <br />h A~.the.time of the accident, Mr. Sykes was still on d~ty as a call-m~n, the Fire Chief <br />aving a~reoted him ~o report to the quarters of Engine Co. No. 1 for a dry shift of clothing <br />and then ~o Engine Co. No~. 5. <br /> <br /> The ¥ire C~ief states that during the War p~r~o.d, Mr. Sykes was a valuable adjunct to <br />the Fir~ Dpt. an~ he feels that he should be re-imbursed for the injuries sustained by him <br />in responding to-the a~larm, <br /> <br /> Mr. Sykes claims re-imbursemen~ for eighty seven days service at $4.~5 per day~ After <br />his injuries he was pai~ for two days and w~s re-employed as a call-man on the llth of July, <br />He is therefore entitled to re-lmbursement for not more th~n eighty five days. As he was <br />carried as a call-man, his ra~e of pay is $4.00 per dmy. <br /> <br /> <br />
