On motion of Mr. 0asr, seconded by Mr. Esleeck, the report of the Committee was adopted,

and by the following vote:
Ayes~ Brooks, Esleeck, Hutohins, Oast, Smith,
Stewart, l~hite, 7.
The following oommunioati0ns were read f~om the City N~n~ger:
1st. "Acting on vs~ious communications from Federml inspectors and from the officers of
Grimes Battery, I have taken steps to p=ovide fire protection at the temporary stable occupied
by Grimes Battery on Columbia St. This, however, does not give a perm~nen~ solution of the
problem, as the ~ederal'inspeotors are not satisfied with the stable in this locmlity.
I have gone over what seemed to be various attractive propositions mhd the best thing in
my opinion and in this the officers of Grimes Battery and the Federal officer concur, would
be to put the ~stable on a triangular piece, of land south of the Cmthole fronting about 1~5 ft.
on Midelle St. and extending south and east to the Seaboard Air Line; the east and west dimension
being about 220 ft, This site is outside the fire limits and a suitable stmble ~ith g~lv~nized
iron roof and wooden or galvanized iron sides with store-room, guard moom and harness room
could be constructed thereon for three ~ four thousand dollars.
The site is held at $10,000. It is difficult to get at its assesse~ value on account of
lack of definite description, but. sc far as I ca~ det~m$~e~ the assessed value of the entire
plot at the s~theast oo~ner of Mmddte a~d Bs~vt Sts. is $3,200. The site in question is valu-
able as t~e Seaboard Air Line ski~t~ its southern mhd eastern bo~der. I should therefore con-
clude that the assessed v~lue of ~he ~outhern Dart of the site was probably $2,000. I believe
we might well offer $3,000 for thms sxte and i~ it is not accepted to then proceed to condemn
it, mhd I sc =ecommend."
On motion of M~, Esleeok, the pri~iiege cf the floor was granted to a~y one interested
in this mmtte=, and~jo~ Sands, J. C, Emmerson, Jr., and B. B. Ferguson' spoke urging Council
to provide suitable stables for Grimes Battery} ~nd the B~ilding Inspector submitte~ a sketch
of the proposed new stables.

the property ~esoribed in the N~n~ger s communication an~ tz ~ne o~e. ,

riled to enter condemnation proceedings.
N~r. Brooks moved to amend, that Councit. go o~ ~eoord as pledging its support
proper stables for Grimes Batte=y, and that the 0ity M~n~ger ~e instructed to.co~side~ and~sub-
~it several slates at the next meeting of 0ounoil. N~. ~ro~ks amendment receives no sec0na.
Mr. Esleeck's motion was a~opted, and by the following vote:
Ayes-- Es~eeok, Hutchins, Omst, Smith, Stewart, I~hite, 6.
Nays-- Brooks, 1.
Mm. Brooks stmted that he was against ~m~e= of selecting the si~e for the stables
and not against Grimes Battery.
On motion of Mr. Esleeck, the recommer~ded ~ppropriatlon by the ~an~ger for the const~uc-
tion o~ a building on the site was referred to the Finmnce Committee.
End. Recommendation that appropriations of $7.75 be refmnded to D. E. Suter and W. C.
Thomas each, for one-quarter's jitney licenses, said licenses hmving bee~ revoked.
On motion, the recommendation was role=red to the Finance Committee.
3rdo Recommendmtion that 0. M. Bunting, of the Fire Department, be retired on ~ s~lary of
$82.~O~pe~r month, on acooun~ of physical dismbility.
