priation. It being.thought that the work was completed, the unexpended balance reverted to
the ganeral fund. I am now in rdceipt of the attached bill of $5.50 for copying draft list.
I note ~h~t t.h~s ~1~ is d~ted Au_gust l~th, 1921, but-¥ms~i~is a legitimate expenditure, cer-
tified ~o oy ~ne ~naxrm~n of the ~a~ History CommissiOn, I submit it to the Counci~wi~ a
f~vorable recommendation.~ ' .~
St. The proposed conduit will contain fou~ 4 in. a~d eight 3~in. fiber conduits encased in
concretes

As this is a step in the direction of the gradual elimination of overhead wires
from the street and is a construction entirely similar to that already authorized on-Middle
and Fourth~Sts. ~ approval is recommended.
assessmdnt is t~.l.
Applying this ratio to the assessments of the Eighth and Ninth Wa~ds, it
is found that for the Eighth Wa~d a total of $56~,073.11 may beissued and a retell of $331,449.S9
fo~ the Ninth Wa~d.

It is recommended that the City Attorney be requested to draw separate ordinances
6th-. "The Fire Department recently disposed of a l~rge amount of junk at public auction
mhd received for it the sum of $130.00. The typewriter in the Department is eight years old
and is in a very decrepit state, it being possibls a~parently only to write capitals. In view
of the' fact that the Department has collected unexpectedly $130.00, I recommend that an appro-
p~latio~ of $92.00 be made for the purchase of a new typewriter."

On motion, the recommended appropriation was referred to the Fins~nce Committee.

9th, ~The work on the City Park is progressing so much more rapidly than was contemplated,
~hat it wi ltbe necessary to h~ve additionml money in a few weeks. As I understand the situation~
~he Council has appropriated $45,'000.00 for thispurpose of which $12,000.00 was~ made immedia-
tely available. I~ new-seems' that we can complete practically all of the work excepting some
five.p~ si~ t~ousa~d do~la~ in planting before the summer season fully opens. I therefore
ask mnat the Council authorize me to go ahead within the limits of the appropriation of~$~5,000.00.
This money can be secured on notes and can be covered by a bond issue after July l~th.

X do mot believe that it will be necessary to refer this m~tter to the Finance
Committee mgmln, as the mppropri~tionh~s already been made."

On motion of Mr~ White, the balance of the appropriation, or $33,000.00, was marie avail-
able, and. by the following vote:

Ayes-- Brooks, Hutohins, Oast, Smith, Stewart, White, ~.
10th. ~Recommending thatthe following ordinance be enacted. The Portsmouth Auto Bus
Association proposes to put large busses on the Park View route ~nd on the Navy Yard route.
The original number of jitneys authorized on these routes is therefore too high and the pro-
posed ordinance reduces them to a reasonable figure. No injustice will be done to ,any~owner
at present operating, ms reduction goes into effect gradually, as licenses mre not renewed:
