August 12, 1924 <br /> <br />homage to their Heroes, s~zch as is recorded in the histories of the ancient Greeks, and <br />Romans, who p~id the greatest honors possible to their soldiers, ~nd <br /> <br /> Whereas, We the living veter~us' of ~his great co~f~ict do not desire such honors <br />for ourselves, but believe there is no honor too great or too good, for our Conuvades who m~de <br />the supreme sacrifice on the field of battle, in our country's hour of greatest need, and <br /> <br /> Whereas~ We believe Armistice Day, should be designated a City holiday as a fitting <br />comm~moratioD of that memorable d~y in November 1918 when the Peoples of the World and this <br />Oity in particu!~r gave thanks that the slaughter of their relatives, 0omrades and Friends <br />baa ceased after years of struggle against a fee determined upon the ~extermin~tion of them, and <br /> <br /> Whereas, We the members of Portsmouth Post $37, Depe~vtment of Virginia, American <br />Legion, believe that Armistice Day, is celeorateduniversally throughout the Allied Nations <br />with official recognition, therefore, <br /> <br /> Be it Resolved; <br /> out <br /> That ~Armi~tice Day ia the greatest universal holiday with/its exceptiom in this <br />Oentury, that this day, be pl~oed on the oalend~r of Oity Holidays, not for o~e ~pe~i~l <br />occasion, but annually, and that our City should cease its Labors on thi~ d~y to do Honor to <br />the memory of these men ~ud women who sacrificed their life's blood on the alter of 'Freedom <br />and Democracy.' <br /> Respectfully submitted, <br /> <br />Portsmouth Post ~37,-American,Legion. <br />J. Mr. White moved that the communication <br />be laid on the table until the City Manager makes a report on the subject. Mr. White's motion <br />w~s adopted, Mm. Oast voting No. <br /> <br /> A petition was re~ from J. E. Marshall and other property owners and residents of <br />Randolph street, for t~e completion as es~rly as possible of the smooth paving of this thorough- <br />fare. <br /> On motion of Mr. White, the petition was referred to the City Manager fo~ investigation <br />and report. <br /> <br />On motion, <br /> <br />adj curried.~ <br /> <br /> <br />
