August 26, 1924 <br /> <br /> On motion of '~tv. %Thite, the privilege of the floor was gr~.-~uted to Dr. R. L. NcNurran. <br /> Dr. L~Eurran stated that the Corporation reoresented by him had received a charter from <br />the State of North CaroliD~ which authorizes the-Oorporation to operate hu~ullnes and water <br /> constr~ctdh ' tension <br />transportation lines between Eden~on and Portsmouth ~nd to ~gh electric <br />lines for furnishing light and power to various towns in Virginia an North Ca~olin~. <br /> He pointed out a probable increase in business which would come to Portsmouth as ~a result <br />of these improvements and asked the moral support of the 0ounoil. He also strongly urged that <br />the Oounoil send two delegates to the Atlaz~tmo Deepe~ ~aterways Convention to be held in New- <br />ark, N. J.,-September 16-19th, 1924. <br /> N_v. ~hite moved that the recommendation of the ~Nanager that a delegate be appointed <br />to attend the 00nvention of the Atlantic Deeper W~terways, ~.which w~s laid on the table at the <br />last reg~l~ meeting~ of Council, be taken up for consideratioD~ at the next regular meeting of <br />the Oounoil. The motion Was ~dopted. ~ ~ <br /> <br /> Er. Stewart (R.E.B.) presented the following resolution, which was %u~animously adopted: <br /> <br /> "'WHE~.EAS, This is the last meeting of the City O0u~?~oil that the present Presiding Officer, <br />the Nayor, R..A. Hutchins, Jr., will be with us as a mercer; therefore be it <br /> <br /> RESOLVED, That we desire to extend to him our sincere ~henks for the fair and impartial <br />manner in which he h~s presided over this body during histermof office, and we regret th- <br />lose his valuable service, ~ud wish ~im muuh happiness ~nd success in every undertaking for <br />the lunate; and be it further <br /> <br /> RE,SOLVED, That these resolu~ior~s be spread upon the ~zinutes of this Oou~ucil, a~d that <br />certified copy of the same be f~rnishedNayor Hutohins as a~testimonial of our regazds." <br /> <br />On motion, adjourned. <br /> <br /> <br />
