November 12, 1924 <br /> <br />in the 6th Wa~d of this Oity, was refer~ed to the Finance Committee. <br /> <br /> A bill of'Russell A. Walker to amount of $15.00, as substitute Police JustiCe October <br />22nd to October~24th, inclusive, was referred to the Finance Oommittee. <br /> <br /> The following resolutions ~dopted by the Board of Directors of the Portsmouth Ohamber of <br />0ommerce October 21st were-read. <br /> <br /> "UHEREAS, It is now recognized that city advertising is as necessary to city development <br />as~industrial andcomme~cial advertising is to Ludustrial and commercial development, <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, The advertising of a city is of interest to and beneficial to every member of <br />the community, ~ <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, It-is necessary for the Portsmouth 0hamber of Commerce te do display advertising <br />as well as issue folders and pamphlets, which will suitably bring this city before the eyes of <br />the outside world, <br /> <br /> ~THEREFORE, WE, the Board of Directors and 0ffieers of the Portsmouth 0hamber of Oommerce <br />do hereby recommend to the OSty Oo~-ncit of Portsmouth., Virginia, tha~ it appropriate a sum <br />preferably of not less than $]250. to be e_xpended for this purpose, auring 1925, withthe <br />understanding that the expenditure of said money would be made only as the nee~ arises and <br />only'mn the authorization of the 01fy 0ouncil~ <br /> <br />Bennett, President. <br /> <br />Attest: <br />George H. 01ess, Jr., <br /> Executive Seedy." <br /> <br /> On motion, o~he privilege of the floor was granted H. E. Dorin and Geo. H. <br />of the Ohamber of Oommerce, who spoke as to the resolution. <br /> On motion, the resolution was referred to the Finance 0ommittee. <br /> <br />01ess, Jr., <br /> <br />The following communication was read from the Portsmouth Chamber of Oommeroe: <br /> <br />"November 12, 1924. <br /> <br />Honormble 01ty 0ouncil, <br />Portsmouth, Virginia. <br /> <br />Gentlemen:- <br />Realizing l~ Portsmouth the need of more adequate s_~ an improved transportation <br />system, we take this means of calling your attention to the ~u~satisfactory existing conditions. <br /> <br /> This Ohamber has received numerous requests that immediate steps be taken whereby <br />conditioss can be improved. W$,~representing the public feel indebted to take t¥is matter <br />under our advisement. We, t~er~fore~ ear~es}ty reques~ that a committee be appointed from <br />you~ body ~o co~fer with a c~mmittee appoxnt~d by this~Ohamber to study an improved system <br />that we hope may lead to the solving of this vexing sit~ation. <br /> <br />Assuring you of our very eammest cooperation in this behalf, we are, <br /> <br />Very truly yours, <br /> <br />Portsmouth 0hamber of Oommsrce, <br /> <br />W. L. Bennett, President.~ <br /> <br /> Mm. Stewart (R;E.B.) moved that the request of the Portsmouth 0hamber of Oommerce be <br />g~anted, and that a Committee be appointed from this body asrequested. <br /> The motion was adopted, and the 0hair appointed J. Alden O&st, Jno. Howard Hall, and <br />J. R. Stewart to said 0om~ittee. <br /> <br />On motion, <br /> <br />adjourned. <br /> <br /> <br />
