Hall, the co~muaicationwas referred ~o the Oity~l~uager. <br /> <br /> A communication from the Portsmouth Hub-ne Society. asking that the Humerus Officer be <br />assigned a small Ford car, was referred to the. Finance 0ommittee. <br /> <br /> A petition was received from certain merchants of the 0ity of portsmouth d~ing business <br />west of Court St. for the Council to give serious consideration to the matter of paving with_ <br />some smooth surface, that part of 0hestnut St. between Duke and Lincoln streets. <br /> On motion, the petition was referred to the 0ity ~ana~oer. <br /> <br /> On motion of Nr. Hall, the advisability of placing a light at the corner of Fifth Avenue <br />and King street, was referred to the 0ity Nauager. <br /> Mm. Stewart (~E.B.) presented the following resolution: <br /> "RESOLUTION RELATIVE TO 00NSTRUOTING A BRIDGE AOROSS JAMES RIVER JUST ABOVE NE'~PORT N~S <br />FOR ~RAILROAD_ AND HIGHWAY TRAFFI0. <br /> <br /> 1. Whereas, the building_of a Bridge for Railroad.'and Highway traffic, across the James <br />river, just above Newport News, to connect that 0ity with the cities of Portsmouth and Norfolk, <br />is being agltatedand some definite steps have been taken in this connection, and <br /> <br /> 2. Whereas, the constructio~ of the propose~ Bridge wouldnot only be of uatold benefit <br />to ~his immediate section ~nd the Hmmpton Roads D~strict, but to the whole country aS large;~ <br />therefore be it <br /> <br /> 3. Resolved, That the President of this Council is hereby authorized to appoint a Com- <br />mittee of Thxee Members of this Council, with'whom will be associated the Oity Manager, to <br />be a standing~ommittee, knowaas the Hampton Roads Bridge Oommittee, to be helpful and co- <br />operate with the Pert 0ommission, the Government authorities, and like committees appointed <br />by the various civic boddes, etc., to bring about this enterprise, which it is believed would <br />cause an enormous growth of the territoryin questiom, aud ultimately result in the merging <br />of all the now scattered cities around Hampton Roads into one great commercial mart, Nature <br />has fashioned H~ton Roads for such_a~purpose," <br /> <br /> On motion of ~tr. Hall, the resolution was adopted, and the 0hair appointed R.E.B. <br />Stewart, J. 0. Smith, andJ. R. Stewart to said Oommittee. <br /> <br />On motion, adjourned. <br /> <br /> <br />
