Jan~_~ry 21, 1925 passed by the Oounci~ changing the terminus of the jitnsy buses from entsrimg the east end of High St. and t~rning at Water St. to the present terminus in Orawford St. A Careful survey of all business houses in the block in High St.~ between Orawford and Water Sts. indicate since the prdsent ordinance has been in operation three o£ these mer- chants have closed their doors, and three others 'have stated that they also will be compelled to do likewise umless some relief is granted them ~y your Honorable Body. Every business house in the block mentioned has been interviewed for an expression as to What effect the present arrangement of jitneys ha~e had on' their business,, and only one merchant has stated that his ~usiness is better now than before the change was made; and prac- tically all the others join in this -petition .praying for relief at your hands,, stating that they a~e facing bankruptcy. Also property owners, representing six of the largest stores in this block, join in this petition. The change begged for would in no mauner effect the present ordiuance other than per- mitring the j2tney buses to enter High St. at the intersection of 0rawford, and making the turn at Water St. as before. Stewart (R.E.B.), the ordinance was placed on its first reading. NEW B~S INE$S A bill was presented from Phlegar & Tilghman, to amount of $206.?0, as one-half fee for rePOrting case of O. L. Weiss~vs. the City of Portsmouth in the Circuit Oourt of Norfolk County, and fee for transcript of evidence. On motion, the bill was referred to Finance Oommittee. Applioa~ions were read from W. T. RobinsOn and F. O. Robertson for election to Justice of the Pomes from Madtson War~, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Walter H. Edmonds. Mr. Stewsmt (J.R.) moved that Oouncil go into election of Justioeof the Peace from Madison Ward for the unexpire~ term of Walter H. Edmonds. The motion w~s a~!opted, and Mr. $tewa~t~(j,R.) ~ominated W. T. Ro~uson~ for the position.
