"With reference to petition of certain merchants that consideration be given to smooth paving Ohos%nut St. between Duke andLLincoln Sts.,! beg to state that recommendation to this effect has been previously made by me to the Council." On motion, the communication was referred to Finance Committee. 5th. "With reference to communication from Mr. James A. Mulvey, stating %hAt there are no gas mains on the streets in Prentis Place and Prentis Park west of Elm A~e., I beg to state that this has been taken up with the Superintendent of the Gas Company a~d he tells me that reasonable extensions will be m-.de as soon as the sewers in these localities have been installed, the laying of which is now under way. Were the gas maine installed in vance of sewers it is highly p~obable that it would be necessary to mov~ them, as the sewers must run on fixed grades. With reference to the statements that gas has been placed in Waterview and in Glenshallah, attention is invited to the fact that these mains were laid at the expense of the property owners." On motion, the com~-~nication was ordered to_be.filed. 6th. "When the pavement on Ohautauqua Ave. was constructed current funds of the Eighth Ward were used as far as possible, but they were insufficient by some $t1,000.00. This $11,000.00 was therefore charged against the bond issue of the Eighth Ward. It is recommended that the remaining current funds to the credit of this ward be used as far. as practicable and that the charge of $11,000.00 previously made against the bond issue be credited to it." On motion, the recommendation was referred to Finance 0ommittee. 7th. "Last October, Nr. B. L. Lawrence of 650 N. ElmAve. was put to an .expense.of $6.50 due to trouble caused by a broken'sewer in Spratley St. which blocked theirhouse drain. The City Engineer r~commends that he be reimbu~eed for eXPense.incurred a~ a result~ of this breakage and I concur in that recommendation. On motion, the notice was ordered to be filed. ~th. "On December ~6tH the Veterans of Fsreign Wars held a dance in the MuniCipal Audi- torium. The heating plant broke down and as a result claim is ~ade that the 'Veterans lost heavily by reason of small attendance.~ Our contract which the lessee is required.to sign binds the Oit~ to furnish light, heat and water and in thi~ particular c~se%he contract wa~ n~t carried out so far as heat was~oonoerned, The Director of Public WelfsLve recommends that the fee che~ged the Veterans~ 5f $2~.00 be refunded. ! concur in this recomm~ndation." - (Present Mr. lOth. "The refrigerating plant at the market was designed to work for a fully occupied market and with only a part of the stalls rented, it is not working satisfactorily so far as display boxes are concerned. The circulation of the ammonia is controlled by a thermosta~ in the ice boxes. These being opened~ut rarely the temperature in the boxes drip and the circulation is cut off, although the temperature in the display cases may be high. Were all ice boxes opened frequently this trouble would probably not occur. It is essential, however, that prompt action be taken in the matter especially as warmer weather will soon be approaching. To put in a separate circulating system for the display cases which will be controlled by the temperature in these cases will cost $300.00. It is recommended that this appropriation be made as an emergency appropriation tonight." Onmotion cf Mr. Stewart (R.E.B.), the recommendation of the Manager was concurred in, and the appropriation of $300.00 allowed for the Farpose requested; and by the following vote: Ayes-- Hall, Oas%, Stewart (J.R.), Stewart (R.E.B.), llth. "I recommend that 2,?~0 ft. of curb and ~attering on Seventh Ave. between North and 0harles ets. and on Elizabeth St. between Sixth and Seventh, estimated to cost be added to the approved project for curbs and guttering in the Eighth Ward. Thereare suf- ficient funds in the appropriation for this work to provide for the additional expense." On motion, the recommendation was referred to the Finance Oommittee. 12~h.
