PENDER GROOERY OONPANY,

By T. A. Vaugh_~n, Supt. of Portsmouth Diet;·
On motion, ~Jae communication was referred to Finance Committee.

9th. ~With reference to ~your instructions for report on paving Randolph St., I beg to
state that the cost pf paving this street from First St. to Virgi$ia St. with bituminous macadam,
including the relaying of stone gutter, removing_and resetting present curbing and paving
roadway 21 ft. wide with bituminc~s macadam and 8 ft. with stone, making a total width of ~?
ft. for the roadway will be ~t~,200.00.

As P~_ndolph St. was not paved when other streets in South Portsmou+Ja were provided
for on account of the fact that it was then thought that the ~in sewer outfall would be brought
down Randolph St., it is recommended that this project be approved and be covered in the next
paving program. #

On motion, the recommendation was refer~red to the Finance Oozmnittee.
10th. e! have been requested by the assessors to famish them with a typist in order to
complete the work required of them by December l~t.

! have looked into their work ~.nd while good progress ~has been made, it does not
seem possible that all of the items recfdired of them by the Oouncil can be completed without
further assistance.

The work is being done thoroughly and each item of property is being personally
inspected by the assessors and the necessary measurements made to get correct dimensions. This
information is being recorded on s.epar~.te ~eets for each block but should also in my opinion
be recorded on individual cards, a Self, ate csmd being provided for each item. These cards
are required under instructions from the 0ouncil and as there are bet~een twenty five and thirty
thousand of them, it is manifest that a large amount-of tYpewriting will be involved.

! therefore recommend the temporary appointment of a typist at $7~.00 per month.~
Hr. Brooks moved that ~he matter be referred to the Finance Committee e~d that the City
~uager and the City Attorne~ provide the Finance Committee with the necessary information for
intellegent action.

llth. "I am forwardiug herewith a letter dated June l~th, 1925, from the Waterview Bm~
Corporation asking anthority~ to do local business in the Oity of Portsmouth between Hamilton
A.~e. and the ferry.

Between the Belt Line and the ferry, this territory is already served by the Port
Norfolk and West Haven street cars, eleven~Port Norfolk ~rmsses and six Mt. Hermon Busses. The
territory between the Belt Line and Mt. Vernon Ave. is served by the Port Norfolk, West Haven
street cars and six Mt. Hermon busses; ~em-Mt. Vernon Ave. to Hamilton Ave. the West Haven
cars amd six Mt. He~mon busses seem to give sufficient service.

! find that the average daily earnings of the busses serving this territory is $16.00
or about 11 cents per bus mile. The street cars are not patronized to their capacity. Moreover,
the proposed unified transportation ordinance now ~mder consideration forbids inter-urban busses
to do local business.

The Waterview Bus Corporation is doing a very Commendable public service in inaugu-
rating the Churchland bus line But ! fear authorizing them to do local business in the Oi%y
would st~ll i~tvther-, increase .the losses of the street car con, amy and busses now operating in
the 0ity; would be counter ~o the proposed ordinance and would ~doubtedly bring requests from
other intermrban lines for similar privileges.

Zt,am, however, recommending that this letter and m7 report thereon be referred
the Traction Oommitee for consideration."

On motion of Mr. Smith, the recommendation of the Nanager was concurred .in.
