At a regular meeting of the City Oouncil July 2$th ther_e were present: Messrs--Vernon Brooks, E, W. Maupin,~ Jr., j. C. Smith, J. R.; Stewart, R. E;B. Stewart, L. G. White, 6. _ Also the 0ity Manager. The minutes of the regular meeting July 2~th were read and were approved. REPORTS OF OOMMITTEES Finance-- Referred July Report from the Transportation 0ommi~tee on, and petition from the' Waterview Bus 0orpo- ration asking authority to do local business in the City of Portsmouth between Hamilton Ave. and the ferry. ~ogress as to same. Recommendation of the Manager that Council authorize ~he proper City Officials to w. rite a letter to Mr. Watson asking that hill of 0ol. E. S. Bailey for ~00.00 for l~gal servxces re~dered in ccnnection with the ferry appraisal, he paid from ferry revenues. Progress. Recommendation of the Manager requesting approval of a letter from the Director of Public Welfare asking that an annual ~ppropriation of $3~,O0 be made to purchase a golf~prize. imrogz, e se. Recommendation of the ~f~nager that u telephone be installed at the Superintendent 's cottage in the City Park, and that a special-~ppropriation of $1~O,O0-he allowed for instal- lation and $~0.00 for the rental for the balauce of the Year. Prog'fesso Communication from the Manager forwarding copy of a letter from Mr. Alexander O. Ferehee asking an expression of opinion from the Council ~s to the desirability of erecting a hotel in Portsmouth, and as to whether it should he located on the Municipal property. Progress. Recommendation of the Manager that a special appropriation of $2~50.00 be allowed ~o purchase equipment, for labor~ and for material, for spraying trees infested with the .elm beetle. It is resommended that a special appropriation of $2~O.00 be allowed for this pu~- pose. Communication from the Manager recommending approval of request from the American 0il asking that the portion of Romanesque St, south of County St. he closed. Progress, Reports of the City Auditor, City Collector, and City Treasurer for the month of Jume, l~2 We have examined theserreports and it is recommended that they be filed. Request of the City CollectOr that an appropriation of $100~OO he allowe~ to purchase & filing case for the proper filing of cards and application of drivers,! permits. It is recommended that a special appropriation n6t exceeding $100.O0 be allowed for same; sad in connection with drivers~ permits, it is recommended that a charge of he made for issuing ~l~li~ate cards. Petition of F. M. Wilder and Jo N. Sykes that First Avenue, fr~m Leckie St. to ~igh~S~., he paved. Petition of residents and property owners of West Park View for the quick restoration o~ the Spratley St. ~ridge connecting West Park View and Park View, also submitting that in the restoration of the bridge no filling in should he done on either side of the creek wi%h_ the idea of shortening the span of the bridge. Progress. Petition of Oust, Cast & Oust, Counsel for Court St. Baptist 0hutch,' that taxes assessed against Geo. M. Peed for the sum of $136.60 he relieved, as properi~y 52? Hampton Place owned by Geo. ~. Peed was purchased February 2~th, 1923, by said Church, and has since been used It is recommended that Court St. B&ptist Church he relieved from payment of ten months taxes assessed in the name of ~eo. ~.
