February 9, 1926 <br /> <br /> 3rd. "! beg to announce-th the Council, the death of Mr. L. P. Slater, Sr.;-which took <br /> place on February 3rd, 1926. <br /> <br /> Mr. Slater fought with the 0onfederacy and served the OiSy f0rlms~y years as member <br /> of th~ Council, as President of the 0ouncil, as meMoer of the School Bos~rd ~nd as Oity 01erk. <br /> In all cases his work reflected credit on himself and-he stands out both in public life and <br /> private life as an honored, valued and respected citizen. In his death the community feels <br /> the distinct loss and mourns with his family ~ud relatives that he should be t~ken from us." <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Stewart (R.E.B.), the communication was ordered to be recorded and <br />a copy ordered to be sen~ to the family. <br /> <br /> 4th. "I am submitting herewith draft of an ordLuance establishing a safety zone at the <br />northeast corner of High and Oourt Sts. and prohibiting parking at the s~me corner on High <br />St. for a distance of ninety feet east from the building line. <br /> <br /> This safety zone will have two advantages. It will protect passengers waiting <br />for cars at this 5ernst and will also prevent delays in traffic now caused by strset'cars <br />standing while switches a~e being Tamed.~ Its passage is recommended., <br /> <br /> The following is the ordinanoe: <br /> An Ordinance Establishing~ Safety Zone at the Northeast <br />corner of High and Court streets in the 0ity of Portsmouth and ProhibitingParking on High <br />street Ninety feet East from the Building Line at Tae Same Oorner. <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Stewart (R.E.B.), the ordinance was placed on first reading. <br /> <br /> 5th; "With reference to ordinance prescribir~ rates of fare in the Oity of Portsmouth for <br />for-hire cars, in accordance with instructions of the Council, I beg to recommend the following <br />changes'in the zones, so that it will read as follows: <br /> <br />Zone A- This zone shall extend from the Elizabeth River to Elm Ave. inclusive, and <br /> shall also include West Park View. Rates of fare between points in this <br /> zone shall be ~ifty cents for one passenger ~nd $1.~00 for two or more <br /> ~assengers up mo the seating capacity of the car. - <br /> <br />Zone B- This zone shall extend from Elm Ave. to the Belt Line Railway on the west <br /> and south and to the Atlantic Coast Line Railway on the north and to the <br /> Shell RoAd 6n the south, exclusive of West Park View. The rate of fare <br /> to points within this zone or between points in this zone sba~l be $1.00 <br /> for one or mo~e passengers up to the seating capacity of the car. <br /> <br />Zone O- Uncha.~ged. <br /> <br /> The passage of the ordinance with these modific~ti0ns is recommended., <br /> <br /> Mr. Stewart (J.~R.) moved that the ordinance be taken up for consideration by the Co,mucil <br />at its next regular meeting. The motion was adopted. <br /> <br />UNFINISHED BUSINESS <br /> <br /> The repqrts of the City Treasurer, City 0ollector, and 0ity Auditor for the month of <br />January, 1926, were presented e~d w~Te referred to the Finance 0ommittee. <br /> <br />~2~B~SINESS <br /> <br /> A repor~was ~ead from H. L. H~dgins, Treasurer of the 0ity of Portsmouth, Virginia, of <br />the Sinking Fund for the Year ending December 3I, 1925; and eopiem~ef same were ordered to be <br />~rwarded to members of the Sinking Fund Commission and to members of the 0ouncil. <br /> <br />The following invitation from the Secretary of the Ohamber of Commerce was accepted: <br /> <br />~oYO~ L. Go ~ite, ~ <br /> Portsmouth Stationery 0o., <br />Portsmouth, Virginia. <br /> <br />"Portsmouth, Virginia, February 8, 1926. <br /> <br />Dear. Mayor White:-- <br /> The Virginia Electric and Power Oompany is about to complete the remodeling <br />of its building on High Street and ~s to have its official opening on Monday, January 15th. <br /> <br /> During the day the officials cf the Company will be present to welcome <br />visitors and citizens of Portsmouth and I want to urge that you appoint a committee to re- <br />present city officials and the city council to attend this opening on the afSernoon of Monday, <br />February 15th, between 2 and 5 o'clock. <br /> <br /> In view of the high standing and the wide spread imteres~s of Stone and <br />Webster I~ feel that~we should do everything possible to give them a cordial welcome at their <br />opening on this date. <br /> Will you please advise me of the names of those whom you have selected <br />to represent the city.. <br /> Sincerely yours, <br /> <br />GEORGE H. 0LESS, JR., Executive Seedy." <br /> <br />On ~otion, adjourned. <br /> <br /> <br />
