"Portsmouth, Va.,

November 20, 1926.

Gentlemen:

At the School Board meeting on November 5, 1926, the Finance Oommtttee of the Board
was directed to inform you of the approximate amount of additional lands that will be needed
from the: City to cover the exp~enses of the schools for ~he present year, 1~6. ~

The amount appropriated by the City 0ouucil for 1926 was $313,500.00, ~ogether with
She guarantee that should the total reven~e from other sources than the Oit~ be less th~ -
~0,886. O0, the deficit would be orovidedby the City, the School Board's e~imate of other re-
ceipts being $~,~6.00. . -

Our revised estimate of other receipts is $~6,375.00, this increase being chiefly
due to a g~in of $4,234.?2 in the amount estimated for the Inheritance Tax. The increased
ceipts womld make the necessary additional appropriation approximately $4,500.O0.

However, a revised estimate of disbursements for the year shows a s~ving of approxi-
mately $1,000.00, m~king the additional amomnt necessary for the schools ~oproximately $3,500.00.

We, therefore, respectfully request that you make the amount of $3,500.00, or as
much thereof as m~y be necessary, available by December 23, in order that the teachers, salaries
for the month of December may be paid before the holidays.

Respectfully smbmitted,
