March <br /> <br /> An Ordinauce to Require Persons Moving Household Furnit~ure or Personal Effects of People <br />O~nanging Their Places of Residence from Place to place in the City of Portsmouth or from some <br />Place within the City of portsmouth_to some Place beyond the ~limi~s of the City of PortsmoUth, <br />to furnish information Regarding such RemOval to the City~Oollector of~the City of ~Portsmouth, <br />and Making it Unlawful to Give a Fictitious Name. <br /> <br /> Mr. Maupin presented the ~following resolution: <br /> "wHEREAs, the report of the ,Citizens Com- <br />mittee on Consolidation and Simplification of State and Local Governments~ which will be pre- <br />sented to the General Assembly of Virginia at its special session to begin March 16, 1927, h~s <br />recommended the abolition of the office of 0ity 0olleotor and making it maudatory upon~Oities <br />to permit the City Treasurers, who are state officers, to collect local revenues and <br /> <br /> WHEreAS, the Council of the City ~f Portsmouth is opposed to m~king such a requirement <br />mandatory, but wishes to reserve unto itself the righ$ to maintain the office of Oity 0o!lector <br />and to appoint either the said City 0o!leoto= or City Treasurer as 0olleetor of the Local <br />Revenue, whichever office in the Oouncil's opinion may best serve the 0ity's interest, <br /> <br /> THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, 'By the Oo~ucil of the City of Portsmouth, That the Honorable <br />Alfred C. Smith, State senator, and the Horormble Earl H. Wright, ~nd the HonOrable Lloyd E.~ <br />Warren, Members of the House of Delegates~ be requested to oppose any legislation which may <br />be offered before the General Assembly of Virginia, which may make it mandatory upon the Oity <br />of Portsmouth to have its revenues collected by the City Treasurer, and that a cody of this <br />resolution be at once forwarded by the Oity 01erk to the said Alfred O. Smith, Stat~ Senator, <br />Earl H. Wright ~d Lloyd E. Warren, Members of the House of Delegates, and to his Excellency, <br />Harry F. Byrd, Governor of the State of Virginia.~ <br /> <br />On motion, the resolution was adopted, and by the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes-- Brooks, ~aupin, Mayo, Oast, Stewart, White, 6. <br /> <br />presented the following resolution, which was adopted: <br /> <br /> "Whereas, It is necessary under tbs existing zoning ordinauce that the ownership of certain <br />property affected, be ascertained and consent'of s~id owners obtained before erection of cer- <br />tain bui±dings and establishments therein specified, <br /> <br /> BE IT RESOLVED, That in each case the City Attorney certify to .the 0ity Manager the re- <br />quisite information relative to interested owners." <br /> <br />On motion, <br /> <br />adjourned. <br /> <br /> <br />
