NEW BUSINESS

The following communication was read from the Portsmouth Gas Company:

Honorable Council
Portsmouth, Va.

"Portsmouth,
of the Oity of Portsmouth,

Va., Mar. 30, 1927.

Gentlemen:

The Portsmouth Gas 0ompany petitions the City 0ouncil to amend an ordinance enacted
by the Council Ju~y 27, 1926, entitled: "An Ordinance Prohibiting the erection of certain
classes of buildings or the alteration'of existing buildings for certain uses on any site
which has not been approved by the City Council of the City of Portsmouth; orescribing methods
of issuing permits for such erection or alteration and imposing penalties f~r violations
thereof,, so as to enable the Gas Company to erect upon its property, owned many years prior
t6 the enactment of this ordinance, a gas holder.

The property upon which the proposed new holder would be placed is that property
boun~ Dy Washington Street on the east, Gas House Lane on the south, Guthrie Lane on the
west, and Aetna Eealty Oompany on the north,

The capacity of the proposed holder will not exceed 750,000 cu. ft., with a diameter
of about 108 feet. The height of the holder will be determined by the diameter. We are in
hopes that we will be able to get a holder of 750,000 cu. ft. in this space and the height ~
will no~ be in excess of the u~Gal practice in holder building.

The palnting~f the holder will be green,\gray, or both, believing that these colors
harmonize more readily with the surroundings than any other color.

The need of an additional storage holder to enable the Gas Oompany to maintain suf-
ficient pressure and supply of gas on the town is so apparent at this time that we are fearful
that, unless we are given immediate permission to begin the erectio~ of a holder, there is a
liability of a gas shortage occurring during the fall of 1R27 and wmnter of 1~27-2~. To enable
us to have the holder ready for the heavy demand that will be put upon it, it will be necessary
to begin the ~ection not later than April 15th, owing to the length of time required to com-
plete the construction of a holder.
