M~upin, the resolution was adopted. <br /> <br />Mr. Stewart presented the following resolution: <br /> <br />"RESOLUTIONS <br /> <br /> WHEREAS; the wage workers of Portsmouth and vicinity comprise a most vitally integral <br />p~rt of our citizenship; and <br /> <br /> ~W~EAS, enforced idleness of these citizens directly affects the economic life of our <br />municipality as a whole; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, The Seaboard A~r Line Railway 0ompanyh~s h~d three lay-offs in the past six <br />months, and recently laid off a large number of i~s citizen-employees for an indefinite period, <br />m~ny of whom have devoted the best portion of ~heir natural lives to loyal and faithful ser- <br />vice of this oQr~oany, and all cf whom h~ve families dependent upon their earnings; therefore, <br /> <br /> RESOLVED: That Portsmouth 0ity 0oun~il i~ meeting assembled deeply re~rets this lay-off <br />of the Seaboard Air Line Railway shop employees of Portsmouth and vicinity and feels it a <br />most serious blow to the progress of this comm-~nity; and be it further <br /> <br /> RESOLVED: That'we, the duly elected representatives of the municipalityand citizens <br />as a whole, urgently ~equest the manag?ment of-the Seaboard Air Line Railway Company to re- <br />store all its citizen employees to themr former positions at the earliest possible date, <br />the present and~m~re good-andwelfare of the City and its community of interests demanding <br />such restoration. <br /> <br /> RESOLVED: That our Honorable Mayor and 0ity Manage~ be, and are hereby empowered and <br />instructed to present these resolutions to .the President of the Seaboard Air Line Railway <br />0ompany with the compliments of the City of Portsmouth, and copies be furnished the press <br />for publication." <br /> <br />On motion o~ Mr. N~upin, the resolutions were adopted, and by the following vote; <br /> <br />Ayes-- Brooks, Dunford, Maup~n, Mayo, 0ast, Stewart, ~T~ite, ?. <br /> <br /> In connection with this m~tter, M~r. Stew~art moved that the Mayor and 0ity Manager be <br />authorized to take this matter up with other organizations and ask them to adopt similar re- <br />solutions. The motion w&s adopted. <br /> <br /> M~. M~upin moved that the following ordinance,-~whlch had been laid on the table April <br />26th, be taken from the table~ The motion was adopted. <br /> Mr. Mamtsin then moved that the _ordinance be placed on its first reading. Mr. Cast <br />move~ that ~he ordinance be continued on the table until the .next meeting of the 0ouncil. <br />The motion was adopted. <br /> ~n this con~ection, Mr. Nhite moved that the Oity Attorne~ be instructed to bring in <br />an ordinance omitting from Section 2 o~ an ordinance entitled, "An0rdinanCe to Amend and Re- <br />ordain an Ordinance en~imled, 'An Ordinance Prohibiting the Erection of 0ertain Classes of <br />Bui!d~l~gs or the A±teratioms of Existing Buildings for 0strain Uses on any Site wkich has <br />~ot been~ppr0ved by the City Council of the City of Portsmoumh; Prescribing Methods of issuing <br />permits for such Erection or Alteration and Imposing Penalties for Violations Thereof, adopted <br />by the Council of ~he Oity of Portsmouth on the 2?thd~y cf July, 1926," ~ll. reference to <br />property owners sigming petitions for the erection of any of the Prohibited Structures, and <br />the creation of a-Beard of Recommendation ~o pass on such matters, who shall submit their <br />findings to the ¢ityoounctl. <br /> The motion was adopted. <br /> <br />On motion, adjourned. <br /> <br />*An Ordinanc~ to Amend and He-ordain an Ordinance Entitled, "An Ordinance Prohibiting the <br />Erection of Certain Classes of Buildings or the Alterations of Existing Buildings for Oe2- <br />rain Uses on Any Site which has not been Approved by the City Oouncil of the City .of Por~s- <br />mouth; Prescribing Methods of Issuing Permits for such Erection or Alteration and Imposing <br />Penaltiea for Violations Thereof" Adopted by the 0ouncil of the City of Portsmouth on the <br />~?th day of July, 1~26. <br /> <br /> <br />
