<br />the George Washington Highway between Elm and Pear~l Sts. with %he city~ sewer. The l~eweraga

<br />regulations concerning the ins~ation of plumbing,. The ~C~ty Engineer states that should per
<br />mission be granted, it would be necessary .to run a ~"-lateral t9 each house, the cost the=eof
<br />to be borne by the owner, M~. Barclay, and that a permit may ~e' necessary from the State or
<br />County to open the highway, which cost also must:be borne .by Mr..Barclay.

<br /> In view of the fact that these houses are located right at the city line and that
<br />connecting them with the city sawer will remove ~n objection, ! believe it would be well for
<br />the city to grant this request. ! did not feel, however, that,! had authority as the houses
<br />are not located Within the city limitS.

<br />Gentlemen:--.

<br /> ~As for Storage 0orporation~ hereby make application for
<br />the Steward $26rage Oorporation to erect a~filling station~at the northwestcorner of High
<br />Street and Virginia Avenue, or what. is commonly known as High Street, and 2he Belt Line, in the
<br />City of Po~t~mouth, Virginia. This corporation, if the permit is granted, will erect such a
<br />bu~!~ing, amwiltbe.a credit to the City of Portsmouth. They also make application to install
<br />two[.~nks· of fifteen thousand get, on capacity each. These tanks will be installed overhead or
<br />underground and according to the znstruct~ons of the Chief of Fire Protsction,.and will conform
<br />to the specifications of the National Fire Underwriters and will bear the Underwriters certifi-
<br />cate of inspection. This matter is being bromght to the attention of the 0tty Council as the
<br />ordinance requires any permit for a tank of over one thousand gallon capacity to be approved
<br />by the City Council.

<br /> There are no residences or buixdings near ~h~s property. The property is bounded
<br />on the so~h by High Street, on the west ~y vacant land belonging to Norman oassell, on the north
<br />by vaoan~ land belonging to Norma~ Cassetl, and on the east by'Virgimia Avenue, or the B~lt Line
<br />Railroad.
