The School Board recj~ests your permission to use approximately $1700 of this <br />amount to operate the Night Schools for the months of October, November and December. <br /> <br />Yours very truly, <br /> <br />Nellie J. Maupin, the application was referred to the 0ity Manager. <br /> <br />The following petition was <br /> <br />to <br /> <br />"The Honorable Oity Oouncil, <br />Per tsmouzh, Virginia. <br /> <br />Gentlemen: <br /> <br /> We, the undersigned, tax payers of the City of Portsmouth do hereby respect- <br />fully petition your Honorable Body to ~mend the present tax ordinance so that our machiner~ <br />now ts~xed as rea~ estate, at the rate of $2.70 per One hundmed dollars, may be s~bjected only <br />mo the present machinery tax of $.20 per One h~ndred Dollars. <br /> <br /> We feel that the present basis of taxation whereby newly installed machinery <br />bears the new rate, and old existing mac~hinery bea~s the higher real estate tax, is manifestly <br />unfair ~ud discriminatory. <br /> <br /> We are attacking hereto an opinion of Orocker& 0rocker, Attorneys, as to the <br />legality of our request, together with a draft of a s-oggestive ordinance covering the same.
