October 11, 1927 On motion of Dr. Brooks, the ~wo resolutions were adopted. NEW BUSINESS A communication ~s read from Mrs. Ohae. A. Foster, 633 Harrison street, ~l~ling attention to the condition of a drain, between the properties of E. L. Price and $. Foster, located near the corner of Harrison a~d W~Shington streets. On motion of Mr. Naupin, same was referred to the 0ity ~am~ger for report at the next regula~ meeting of Council. The following communication was read from N~s. Sarah R. Oodd: "Portsmouth, Va., Oct. ~, 1~27. Honorable City Oounci£, Portsmouth, Vs~ Gentlemen: t~o lots numbered 835 and 837 Avenue H, Oak Grove. Cemetery, Portsmouth, va., w~e a~thorized to be draw~ for ~he lots A~st I ~ve no deed %o the above n~ed lots ~d I e~nestly request ~a~ for the lots. ~s. Sarah R. O~dd, The record of the City Council shows that July. 25~: 191~, William J. Oodd purchaeed and ~hat a deed that a deed be Widow of William J. 0odd." On motion of Mr. Mayo, the com~anica~ion was referred to the-0ity Attorney for report at the next regular meeting of ~he 0ouneil. A petition was received from certain qualified voters of Lee Ward that Council declare the office of Justice of Peace for said Wamd vacant, on account of the continued absence from the Ward of the present encmmbent, who h~s no~ m~intained his reslde~ce in the wa~d for the last ~nety days, a~ recommendln~ for election ~o said~ office, if declared vacant, the name ef R. F. perkins, a qualified resident of the Ward. On motion of Dr. Brooks, the petition was referred mo the 0ity Manager and Oity Attorney. A petition was read from certain property owners and business men on Crawford street, requesting that Council take some action to create a "Whit~ Way~ ~ighting system on said street south of High street. On motion of Dr. Brooks, the petition was referred'to the City M~nager to report on same mt the next regular meeting of 0ouncil. A peti~ionwas read from certain property owners and business men on 0rawford street, requesting that Council have smooth surfaced the west .side of 0rawford stree~'south of High street. On momion of B~. Brooks, the petition was referred ~o the 0ity Manager to report on same at the meeting of Council November Sth. The foZlowing comm~$~nications were read: "Portsmouth, Va., October 10, 1~27. Hon. City Council, Portsmouth, Va. Gentlemen:- I ~espectfully request that the City remove_the trees fro~ the.s~ewal~.on_~igh. S~reet in fron~ of my property situate on the north-eas~ corner of High ~u ~anwidcme ~ree~s. The owners-of the Colony theatre have erected an eiectrie~sign in front of their theatre which is a credi~ to the city, and I am asking that the trees £~ front of my building be cut dowm in order that the view of said sign will not be obstructed.
