November 1st, at 8 o'clock p. m.,
there were present:

~essrs-- Vernon Brooks, E.W. Maupin, Jr., J. Alden Oust,
L. G. Relative to the appropriation for gasoline, if I remember correctly, when the
budget for ~th~s year~ was m~de up we did not e~pect thewS5,00~. appropriated to be sufficient.
In 1~26 $6,~86.73 was ~pproprimted fo~ gasoline amd in 1~27 $5,000 was appropriated. We D~ve
a b~lance ~f $37.?~ and September's bmlls have not been paid. I have watched the consumption
of gasoline very closely and have put limits on most of the cars, but with our motor equipmen$-
in the various departments constantly rendering service to the citizens, it is n~ura-lly a
hard matter to keep the appropriation for gasoline down very low. However, I will continue
to check up on its use. We will have a ~ebate of approximately $1,200. from the State which
will go into the Treasury. [ recommend that an appropriation of $1500.0G be made to care
for the remainder of the year. Even with additional cars and increased service, the gas bill
will not be larger this year than in 1~26.

2. With reference to an appropriation of _/~00. f~r 0oroner's Inquests for the r~mG~nder
of the year, I have looked into this matter and find we now have on hand approximately $230.00
in bills and this money will appaLrently De needed ~o csme for the remalnder~of the year.
recommend that the necessary ~opropriation bf '$400. be made.

3. I have investigated complaint of Mrs. Chas. A. Foster calling attention to condition
of a d~ainbetween the properties of E. L. Price and S. Foster, located near the corne~ of
H~rrison and Washington Sts. I find there are many places tb_roughou~ the city in simila~ con-
dition. The 0ity Engineer and I have gone over ~hese matters and when we consider the budge~
! will submit some data which is being prepared now. This will give us more light not only
on this par~icu£ar situation but on the others as well.

~. I have taken ~p with the Virginia Electric & Power Oompany the mat~er referred ~o me
relative to the petition of the merchants of Crawford~St.~that some actio~ be taken to create
a 'White Way' lighting system on Orawford St. south o~ High S~. An estimate will be prepared
by the Po~er Compan2 ~nd upon receip~ cf same, I will report further to your body.

5- Relative to petition of certain property owners a.nd business men on C~awford St. to
have Crawford St. south of High St. (west side) smooth surxaced, I have requested the Engineer-
lng Department to prepare an estimate on this work. which I will have in a few days and ? re-
