White, <br /> <br />24th and special meeting January 31st were <br /> <br />On motionofDr. Dunford, th~ privi~lege-ofthef~o~ was grant-e~to-two..deIegations present.. <br />Mrs. R. TripletS, representing the ~ladies ofmWeet ~k View, brought to'the attention <br />of the City Council the bad condition cf the Spratley ~r~ Bridge and askedthat same be put <br />in repairs for traffic. <br /> On motion of Mr. White, the matter was referred to th~ City Manager for investigation <br />and report. <br /> <br /> Messrs. C. N. Markham and j. Davis Reed spoke urging~the-Oounctl to appropriate the sum <br />of $1,000.00 to be ueed in advertising in the offi¢~t program of the Grand Camp Confederate <br />Veterans of Vtrginim, which will hold its 41st Annual E~campment in Portsmouth ~une tg-20-21st. <br /> In this co~ection, the following communication was read: <br /> <br />To 2he City~[anager and <br />City Council, <br />Portsmouth, Va. <br /> <br />"Portsmouth, Va., <br /> February 1, 192~. <br /> <br />Gentlemen: <br /> <br /> The Grand Camp Cor~ederate Veterans of Virginia will held their ~Ist Annual Encamp- <br />ment in this City on the Ig-~O-21st of June, 1~28. As this is the first and only'time cur <br />city will be called upon to entertain theseloyal sons of old Virginia, the committee feels <br />that the Council, as representatives of the people, should be especially interested in making <br />this one of the greatest events in the history of ou~ city. <br /> <br /> Information obtained by the 0ommittee, from cities when, these encampments have <br />been previously held, is ~o the effect that it will cost approximately $3,000, and the Committee <br />anticipates to,raise a pa~t of this amount from advertisements and voluntary contributions. "On Saturday, Feb. <br />~th, Tilton B. 0hetty, an employee ef the Sewer Department, was fatally injured by falling <br />from the sewer truc~ at Dinwiddie and King Sis. He struck his head on the pavement, was <br />rendered insensible and neve=~ regained consciousness, dying Suuday, February 5th. <br /> <br /> This matter has been referred to the City Attcrne~ and report forwarded to the Industrial <br />Commission for investigation amd decision as to settlement, of which you will be advised later." <br /> <br />On motion, the communication was ordered to be filed. <br /> <br /> 2nd. "AttaChed you will find letter signed by Mr. W. A. Cox, Director of Port, relative <br />to consideration by the government cf the removal of all the ammunition stored at Curtis Bay <br />and Raritan Arsenal to Pig Point. <br /> <br />A short time ago, Dr. Brooks wired Congressman Deal cppcslng such action by the <br />G~verument, but it does net look as if the matter is settled.
