Gentlemen:

There is a suit pending in the Court of Hustings for the City of Portsmouth under
the style of R. A. Robertson against Rebecca H. Vinson and others for the sale of certain
property at the corner of High and Godwin Streets, and a house and lot adjoining on .the west.
Taxes are due on both parcels for several years. The corner lot is assessed to Mary tMaillips,
who is dea~, and her husband is entitled to it by right of curtesy. He has been away~for
several years and pays no attention to the property. As long as he lives his interest Im
respo~sibl6 for the taxes, and for this reason the other owners are unwilling to pay the same.
At the present rate of assessment it will not take long for the taxes to amount to more than
the value of the property. I believe it will be for the best interest of the City for it
ta file a petition in the suit as~ that the property be sold for the payment of the taxes.
I therefore request that you give me this authority.

·ours very truly,

R. C. BARCLAY, City Attorney.,
On motion of Mr. Maupin, the recommendation of the City Attorney was concurred in.
