"Portsmouth,

Virginia,

October 22nd, 1930.

Honorable Sirs:--

In acknowledging ~eceipt of a letter from City 01erk Brinson, advising of
the adoption by your body of'an ~0rdinance to close and vacate North Court and that portion
of Summit ~Avenue west of Pearl Street, ~nd St. Paul's Oatholio 0emetery, as show, on the plat
of M~gruder. addition to the City of Portsmouth,' I wish to express profound-thanks for the wise
consideration and prompZness given this matter by Mour honorable and highly efficient body, and
by. the othe~ city officials interested.

The two street ends closed, were practically put on th~ original map to
enable the sale of the mbutting lots, which said lots were all purchased as a whole for cemetery
purposes. Hence these small parts of streets in question, which were never actually opened,
were of no benefit to the public. Their closing has enabled the placing of this property on
the new city, map asone compact body of land, facing on Pearl, Elm, Gosport Road and Oentre
Avenue, and atsoadding to.the symetrical appearsnce of Pearl Street.

The closing of these street ends is a matter of deep gratification, not
alone to me personally, but also to a large number of o'~r citizens whom I happen to represent,
and fo= whom ~the. oemetery in question, as in the case of other cemeteries, has a kind of
public chs~raGter. This letter is written to express ou~ appreciation of the action of the
Oity 0ou~oil~in passing the Ordinance after fu~! and prudent investigation.

'd With best wishes for the continued success of your splendid administration,
and asking Go to bless abundantly your honorable ~ody, as well as ~ll our citizens to further
whose interests you have with such marked success devoted your time, energy and abilities,
I remain, ~
Most oordially~yours,

Rev. F. Joseph ~agri,
Pastor, St. Paul's Church,
