Stewart presented the following resolution: <br /> .,'FHEREAS,.widespread unemployment has <br /> prevailed for months throughout our nation, and. although.our.citymaY be-somewhaT more gortunate <br /> than some other sections of the country, there are many.men, in.Portsmouth who are unemployed, <br /> some of their families a~e in need and many more will be in the same position shortly, and <br /> WHEREAS, the President of the United Stat~s, the Governors of all the States ~nd the <br /> Councils of many cities throughout the country are lending every possible aid toward-providing <br /> work for the unemployed, <br /> THEREFORE,.BE IT ,~E$OLVED, that the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Va., go on <br /> as favoring the speeding up of such public.work am possible, <br /> That the ~ity Mam~ger be authorized to spend such money as may be available on construction <br /> work needed by the City and whichwillemploy the largest amount of labor; thereby co-operating <br /> with ~2Ll.ag~ncies whose efforts are' now directed towed relief, .du=i~$ thi~ crisis, ~nd that <br /> the City Manager b~[ instructed to prepare a~p~eg~am'oz suca construction am once." <br /> On motion of 2r. ~ayo, the resolution-wasadopted. <br /> On motion of Mr. Ogg, the privilege of the floor was granted to Mr. Ballard and others <br /> who are in~erested in the d=edging of Scott's Creek. <br /> ~r. Ballard s~ated that the owners of the property will pay for the additional dredging <br /> if they can find a place to dispose of the mud, and that the mud dumps will require bulkheading. <br /> ~r.
