<br /> Minutes of ~he regular meeting held October 13th were read and approved.
<br />
<br /> The following commo~ieations from the Oity ~nager were read:
<br />
<br /> 1st - ~I am attaching hereto a red, est froa Dr. L.J. Roper, Director of Public
<br />Welfs~ve, for an additional appropriation of $700.00 for gratis medicines and burial of
<br />paupers. You will note that Dr. Rop~r's letter states the expenditure for the b~ozial of
<br />the City's poor to date has far exceeded that for any previous year.
<br /> ~ therefore recommend that tyO0.OO be allowed tonight to pay the bills
<br />we now have on hand and to take care of these two items for the remainder of the year."
<br />
<br /> On motion of~Nr. Nayo the sum of $37450 was appropriated to pay bills already
<br />made, and the City Manager was authorized to incur necessary bills for the balance of the
<br />yeaz, and report at each council meeting.
<br />
<br /> 2nd - "As re uested ~
<br /> ~ · ~ I have seo.u~red bids on various g~ades of fire hose. The
<br />prices range from 63 cts. to $1.30 oer foot. tt has been the policy for the past eight
<br />or ten years to purchase the best g~ade of hose. We have found this practice to be the
<br />most economical.
<br /> I hereby recomm~end that an appropriation of $1,~50.00 be made to purchase
<br />approximately 1500 feet of hose."

<br /> On motion of Mr. Stew~rt, same was laid on table until next meeting.

<br /> 3~d - "In 1930 we issued $900,000. hots oayable 1931 interest oayable at maturity.
<br />$675,000~ has already become due and~ interest paid~ to take uo these no~es, we paid $25,000.
<br /> .issued $100,OOO. note for one year and the b~lanoe of $550,00~. was issued to heoome due
<br />this year, interest on which will be$13,750, over and above in~erest provided for these
<br />notes.
<br /> In making the ~udget, interest was provided on $900,000. ~ 4 1/~ and we
<br /> h~ve paid 5% interest, makes the appropriation shor~ $4,500.

<br />table until this meeting, was taken up and read, and on motion of Mr. Ogg, laid on table:

<br /> "An Ordinance to amend and re-ordain sub-section A of section 3OY of an
<br /> Ordinance entitled ,An Ordinance to amend and re-ordain Sections 306 to 329
<br /> inclusive, 0hapter 21 of the City~ Gods, adopted June l?th, 1920~ and $o amend
<br /> and re-ordain subsection D of Sect ion 307 of said ordinance as amended'by an
<br /> ordinance adopted M~y 13th, 1930, and to mnend'~ and re-ordain Subsection B
<br /> of Section 309 of said ordinance as amended by an ordinance adooted June 3rd,
<br /> 1924, and to add a new Section thereto to be known as section 3~8 and to re-
<br /> peal Section 310 of said ordinance, said ordinance relating to the operation
<br /> of the Portsmouth Water Department and charges of' water."

<br /> ordinance adopted June 20th, 1928, and to ~mend and re-ordain Section 312 of
<br /> Said ordinance as amended by an ordinance adopted May 22nd, 1923, and ~o rescind
<br /> Section 319 thereof, said ordinance relating to the operation of the Water De-
<br /> partment.,

<br />Resolution asking "The Oity of Suffolk, to ca~cel all re-quests heretofore made
<br />as to the installation by the City of Portsmouth Of wa~ mains and furs hydrants outside
<br />the corporate limits of Suffolk" laid on table October'13th until this meeting, was taken
<br />up and read, and on motion of Mr. Maupin, was continued on the table.

<br /> Ordinance for the issuance of Three Hur~red ~d Fifty Thousand Dollars of bonds
<br />~s~ed on its first reading October 13th, and laid on ~tabte until this meeting, w as, on
<br />~otion, deferred until later in the meetLug.

<br /> Daily report of the Accounting Department for October 26th was received and
<br />ordered filed.
