The following letter was read:

tPartsmouth, Virginia,
April 17th, 1933.

Honorable City 0ouncil,
Portsmouth, Va.

Gentlemen:

At a regular meeting of the Harrison Ward Civic and Improvement League, held March
27, 1933, the League discussed the contemplated closing of Prentis Pa~k School due to the
cut in the school budget for the year of 1933-1934, and the League instructed the Executive
Committee to attend the 0ity Oouncil meeting and protest against the closing of Prentis Park
School.
I~ is, and has been our pleasure to cooperate with the City Council, and City Mana-
ge= in their efforts to operate our city government as economically as potsfole, but our League
is very desLvous of impressing the City Council with the fact that we live in one of the most
progressive sections of the City, growing each year in new homes-as your buildings permits will
show.
If the Prentis Park School is closed it will mean a depreciation in the value of our
property throughout the Ward.
There will be quite a number of new pupils entering the Prentis Park School in Sept-
ember, and February, and we want to emphasize the danger and the distance traveled that these
small children will be placed in if they have to attend Robert E. Lee School, and we think
that this will warrant your worthy consideration, we want to assure you of our willingness to
cooperate, but at the same time we earnestly ask that you appreciate our position in this mat-
ter.
We are not complaining about our taxes, although on information &trainable most of
our residents taxes have been increased.
We realize that the city can not give service to its citi~mens and meet its obliga-
tions without suf£icie~t money, and for that reason, we feel that we should be willing to bear
proportionate part of taxes,
We sincerely trust that you will give this matter your worthy consideration, assur-
ing you of. our cooperation.

Respectfully yours,

(Signed) Chas. S. Anderson, Secretary,
Harrison Ward Oivic& Improvement
League."

Privilege of floor was granted Mr. L.L. Fry who spoke in favor of the letter.

Motion of Mr. Ecx to refer to City Manager with request that he take the matter
up with school authorities, was adopted.

Report of Fred F. Ames for auditing books and acco~uts of Norfolk County Ferries
for March, 1933, was received and ordered filed.

motion adj curried.

CITY CLERK.

Pre side nt.
