Per tsmouth~ Virginia.

Gentlemen:

In behalf of the parents of the ~¢hool children of portsmouth, I respectfully
quest your honorable body in considering the appropriation~or the sehools, to take no action
that would curtail the opportun_t~es offered to the children of portsmouth in r eduction of
the length of the school term or the cutting out of those so-called soecial subjects as art,
manual training, music, physical trazumng, et~, that mean so much for the development, train-
ing a~d happiness of the childhood of Portsmouth.
If this great reduction is made in t~he School funds, the school curriculum of Ports-
mouth will be put back where it stood long years ago, a set back which we feel will be a sad
mistake, as this move will mean that the portsmouth schools will no longer be recognized as a
credited school and our children will not h~ve the foundation that will fit them for a well
rounded life or that will ma~e them eligible to enter first-claSS colleges.
I respectfully request that this letter be read before your body at your meeting on
Tuesday, July 25th.
