Oast to appropriate $25.00 to pay same, was adopted. <br /> <br /> The following latter was read: <br /> <br /> ~At a rearing of the Board of Equalization the matter of the amount of work in- <br />volved in the're~iews of assessments to be considered this year has been brought to oU~ at-- <br />tention the fact that the work of the board will be practically as g~eat a~ it was before when <br />a much larger sum was appropriated fo~ the use of the board. <br /> Having discussed the matter with the Oommissioner ~f Revenue as to the number <br />of recuests for adjustments coming to his attention, as well as the number that have been pre- <br />sente~ oersonally to the various members of the Board, we a~e of the opinion that an addition- <br />al aoor~priation should be made by the 0aunoil in view of the large amount of work involved. <br /> ~' The previous b~rd~' approximatel~ reviewed 6000 oieoes of property and from ~ores- <br />ent indications the present board will review as many assessments for adjustmentS. Shirley Hops, State Game Warden, in amount $142.50, for destroying <br />5~ tagtsss dogs at $2.50 ~aoh, was read. <br /> Motion of Mr. Fox to authorize the Treasure~ to ~y same from funds in her <br />hands from collection of dog taxes, was adopted. <br /> <br />The following letter was read: <br /> <br />"port~outh, Va.~ Oct. 5, 1934. <br /> <br />Portsmouth Oity 0ouncil, <br />Portsmouth, Virginia. <br /> <br />Gentlemen: <br /> For the past three or four years, the different organizations that are affili- <br />ated with the Portsmouth Oentral Labor Union have been sponsoring a move to establish free <br />school books.- <br /> There are six cities of Virginia that are now giving free school books; namely <br />Riob~nond, Newport News, Winchester, Lynchburg, Norfolk and Roanoke. These cities report a <br />cost of about fifty cents per child for the free books. <br /> In regards thereto, it has been <br /> <br /> RESOLVED: By the Portsmouth Central Labor Union, that the 0ity Oouncil of <br /> the Oity of Portsmouth be urged to consider making provisions in the next <br /> budget for the Oity of PortSmouth to furnish free text books to all stu- <br /> dents a~tending ~he City's ~nblic schools. <br /> <br /> <br />
