Several cities in Virginia are making annual appropriations to Cham-
bers of Oommerce and Advertising Agencies for this purpose and we =equest you to have in mind
this matter when you are making up the city budget for next year.
We might state in this connection that at one time Portsmouth City Oouncil
appropriated $1500. per annum for this wo=k, and this money ~as spent by the Chamber of Com-
merce in advertising the City Later on the sumof $500.00 was appropriated, b~t du~ing the
last two years the appropriation h~s been $300~00
We wish to say that during the year of l~31 this Ohamber received fxom the
City the sum ~f $500.00 ~o be used for advertising purposes and. spent this entime ~mount.plus
$250.00 from our general fund to secure an Industrial Survey which was printed and distrzbuted
to many points along the Etlantic Sesfooard hnd th~u the South
We believe that a reasonable s~m spent for-advertising purposes will be richly
repaid, and we therefore xespeetfully request an appropriation of $1,000.00 for the purpose
as above outlined.
Very sincerely,

~'Portsmouth Ohamber
B.B.
