Motion Mr. Hutchins <br /> <br />refer to 1935 Budget, <br /> <br />was adopted. <br /> <br />The following letter was read: <br /> <br />,Portsmouth, Virginia, <br /> Jan. 1st, 1935, <br /> <br />The Honorable Oity Ooun¢il, <br />Portsmouth, Va. <br /> <br />Gentlemen: <br /> It has recently come to our attention through the newspapers that the Oity <br />Oouncil is planning to disturb the present system of medical inspection in our public schools. <br /> We are informed the present system will be taken from-the jurisdiction of the <br />School Board and merged with the Department cf Public Welfare, Inasmuch as this~will necessar- <br />ily afford medical inspection in privately owned institutions, we, Peabody Oouncil No. 106,~ <br />Junior Order of United American Mecha~mos, wish to register our united opposition to the plan. <br /> It is not our desire that public funds be used in privately owned institutions. <br /> In no way is this intended to create religious prejudice, but strictly our <br /> effort that our p~olic schools may receive all that justly belongs to them. <br /> <br />Respectfully, <br /> <br />Eo T. 8wartz <br />0ounoilor. <br />aeli Shepherd <br />Trustee <br />J. Putter <br />Trustee" <br /> <br />On Motion, referred to 1935 Budget. <br /> <br />The following letter was read: <br /> <br />"~1 aharltonApartments, <br /> Redgate and Greenway 0curt, <br /> Norfolk, Virginia, <br /> January 8th, 1935o <br /> <br />To the Honorable Members of <br /> The Oity Oouncit, <br />0ity of portsmouth, <br />Portsmouth, Virginia. <br /> <br />Gentlemen: <br /> I hope that you will appreciate and accept at the same time my apologies for <br />addressing your honorable body, regretting to a~noy you with what might be termed petty things, <br />but knowing that there is a very undecided condition at the present time as to who will re- <br />present the Oity as 0ity Manager, I ~ therefore unable to address that party. <br /> <br /> Being one of the oldest residents of your airy, as well as a member of a family <br />of large tax paying property owners, I am taking the liberty of calling to your attention a <br />condition which is not only very annoying to me, and has been for some time, which places me <br />in a position if it is~ t corrected, to suffer financial l~ss throug~he lack ~ unoccupied <br />property which I have always endeavored to maintain and keep occupied in order that I might <br />secure the necessary returns to take care of taxes which have to be paid. <br /> <br /> The condition which I refer to can best be explained by the attached communi- <br />cation. I have appealed ~ the families cf the parties responsible, and I have also appealed <br />to your Police Department. Not receiving any relief, I necessarily feel that I am entitled to <br />appeal to your most honorable body and have taken the liberty to do so. <br /> <br /> Eeeling that this matter has not been brought to the personal attention of <br />Ohief of Police James Go Talbot, I am also taking the liberty of sending him ~ copy cf this <br />letter, and will appreciate very much any consideration whic~ you can give me. <br /> <br />Yours very truly, <br /> <br />R.
