The following letter was read: <br /> <br />Janunvv 8th_ lqB~. <br /> <br />-Portsmouth, Virginia, <br /> January 8, t935. <br /> <br />Dear Sir: <br /> I a resident and a property owner of 316 pearl Street for forty years, is send- <br />ing a petition against Mr. Oharle Ocdd. Because he want to rent the dwelling house corner of <br />Pearl and Queen Street for the headquarters of his number writing checking place. All the resi- <br />dents of this block is good standing christian peoples and have children and grand children <br />to raise from two years old and up. And the crowd and language they use on the other corner <br />is terrible. The salaries are the basic salaries and the portion <br />payable by the State is subject to such cuts as have been or may be imposed by legislative <br />or executive order. <br /> <br /> For youm ~onvenience, the following paragraph of the Oompe~sation Act is <br />quoted: <br /> ,When the salaries for the several counties and cities have been tentativel~ <br />fixed by the said board they shall notify ~he council, board ~ supervisors or other, govern- <br />ing body of each city and county of the amounts so fixed. Witnmn thirty days thereafter, but <br />not later, the said Oouncil, board cZ supervisors or other governing bod~ may file with the <br />compensation board any objection it may have to the salary so fixed. When such objection is <br />filed a~d the said board shall fix a time for hearing on such objection~ of E~ich time the <br />said council, board of supervisors or other governing body as well as the of~mcer affected <br />shall have at least ten days' notice.
