Brooks, Leslie T. Fox, W.R. Hutchins, S.B. Moore, J. <br />H.F. Parri~h, J.R. SteWart. <br /> <br />Minutes of meeting held February 26th were read and approved. <br /> <br />Alden Oast, <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Stewart to extend privilege of floor tca delegation of colo='ed <br />citizens, was adopted. <br /> <br />same: <br /> <br />Thomas Reid, Jr. presented the following petition, and spoke in reference to <br /> <br /> "The undersigned 0ommittee through Political an~ Oivic Club hereby appears to <br />represent the colored population of said City. <br /> It therefore submit~ for your careful consideration and afte= the same, your <br />immediate action, for the correction cf conditions which affect the chilctren of our group, <br /> (1) In the No~cum-0hestnut St. School section there are in use to provide for the congested <br />condition, five portable one room buildings and three rooms in the Parker Buklding; these eight <br />rooms now~.used by the School~Board to house the children in lower grades are wholly unfit for <br />the said use or any kind of use; they ~re poorly lighted, in bad condition as to heat ~ud in <br />the winter season, theyare cold to such extent, that the Teachers have to shift the children <br />during their period, .in order that they may be warm; and then that method is not satisfactory; <br />the children contract colds and have ~to lo~e time from school due to sickness from the said <br />conditions; the floors of the portables are located on the ground, the window lights are out <br />and the general sit~ation'is one that is absolutely unwholesome, and can not be conducive to <br />health nor mental improvement. <br /> (2) In the Mt. Mormon SChool there are seven hundred children that are using the old time <br />privies and have used them for a long time; this condition is a menace to any community to any <br />community and places the immediate vicinity in grave danger of sickness and death; it is the <br />hope of your.Committee that sewerage connections will be made to relieve said condition; <br /> (3) In considering these items, the report of the School Board for the year 1933-3~, is es- <br />pecially called to ygur attention, with reference to the Section found o~ page fourteen of <br />said report, which ms included under the topic, "Building Needs", the execution of that see- <br />tion by your Body will bring about a solution of the problem; it is imperative that something <br />be done relative to these matters herein r~ferred to, so that the people affected can have <br />some satisfaction and give-some concrete priase for the pr~de, action and favorable considera- <br />tion demonstrated by your Body. It is~the hope of your said Oommittee that the changes urgent- <br />ly desired and absolutely needed b~ made, so that the School Term of 1935-36 will find our <br />children housed in proper environment. <br /> The Council represents all of the people in the OiSy and we bel~ve that such capacity <br />will be demonstrated both in theory and practice, so that the morale of the entire population <br /> <br /> <br />
