Moore, J. Alden Oust, J.R. Stewart, the ~ity <br /> <br />The following cult for the meeting was read: <br /> <br />,Dear Sir: <br /> You are requested to attend a meeting of the City <br />Council, in the Council Chamber, at 4:30 on Monday, April 15th, <br />to consider a proposed substitute for the amendment made to the <br />Bus ordinance on April 9th, 1935." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Moore to <br />passed on April 9th, was adopted and <br /> <br />reconsider the vote bywhioh the Bus ordinance was <br />by the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: Brooks, Fox, Moore, Oast, Stewart <br />Nays:_ None <br /> <br /> Motion of M~. Moore to reconsider the vote by which the amendment to the Bus <br />ordinance was passed on April 9th, was adopted, and by. the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: Brooks, Fox, Moore, 0asr, Stewart. <br />Nays:- None.~ <br /> <br /> Mr. Moore offered the following substitute for the amendment now before the <br />Council, which was adopted: <br /> <br />"PROVIDED FURTHER: <br /> (1) That the Council of the Oity or'Portsmouth in the exer- <br /> cise of the police Dower of said City may prescribe or <br /> approve the size, character and type of motor vehicles <br /> robe,used in rendering this service. <br /> (2) That the Council shall have the right to prescribe from <br /> time to time such schedulem as may be necessary to pro- <br /> vide efficient, adequate service on each route operated <br /> hereunder. <br /> (3) That the Council shall have the right to require any <br /> changes and alterations in rou~es which will not cause <br /> any increa~se in the capital investment or which will <br /> not cause more than a negligible increase of the operat- <br /> ing expenses of the said permit holder, and may require <br /> any other changes, alterations and any subsequent addi- <br /> tions or extensions of or to routes which it may deem <br /> necessary to render efficient public service, provided <br /> the said permit holder has for the preceding six months <br /> earned the reasonable return defined by Section 2 of Ar- <br /> ticle IV of said ordinance adopted July 28, 1926. <br /> (4) That the foregoing provisions shall supersede any and all <br /> provisions ef the ordinance adopted July 28, 1926, in eon- <br /> flies therewith to the extent of such conflict. <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Moore, <br />following vote: <br /> Ayes: Brooks, Fox, <br /> Nays: None. <br /> <br />the Bus ordinance,as amended, <br />Moore, Oast, Stewart - <br /> <br />was adopted, and by the <br /> <br />lowing vote: <br /> <br />On motion of Mr. Moore, the following resolution was adopted, and by the fol- <br /> <br />Ayes: Brooks, Fox, Moore, 0asr, Stewart <br />Nays: None. <br /> <br /> "A!~ESOLUTION TO REQUEST THE STATE 00RPORATION COMMISSION OF VIR- <br /> GINIA TO APPROVE THE APPLIOATION OF THE VIRGINIA ELECTRIO AND <br /> POWER COMPANY TO ABANDON ITS ENTIRE STP~T RAILWAY SYSTEM IN <br /> PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, AND TO SUBSTITUTE BUS SERVIOE .~T~RE~OR., . . <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Council of. the O~ty'of Portsmouth, by ordinance adopted April 9, <br />1935, has granted its consent to the d~scontmmuance and abandtnment by Virginia Electric and <br />Power '~om~ny .of its entire electric street rai~ay system in Portsmouth, Virgi~ia: and <br />WHEREAS, the said Council, by ordinance adopted April 15, 1935, has ~uthorized <br />Virginia Electric & Power Oompany to operate motor buses on the streets of the City in~ ubsti- <br />tution for the rail service; a~d . <br /> WNEREAS, ~he consent and author~ y of'the State Corporation .0ommission of Vir- <br />ginia to sai~ continuance and abandonment of the street railway system is necessary, because <br />one of the lines of said system operates from the City to Cradook, in the County of Norfolk, <br />Virginia. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF TEE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VA. <br /> Section l: That the State Corporation Commission of V~ginia be, and it is <br />herebyz requested to enter appropriate orders authorizing and permitting Virginia Electric & <br />Power Company to discontmnue and abandon the operation of i~s entire electric street railway <br />system in Portsmouth, Virginia, and to substitute bus service therefor. <br /> Section 2: That a certified copy. cZ this resolu~ion be forthwith presented to <br /> <br /> <br />
